transfer gearbox advice please

hi all, i recently attempted to do my rear out put oil seal and to discover there was no dust cap and the fibre washer looked in bad shape. can anyone tell me if the dust cap is a must have or not. when i got everything off to replace i made the decision not to replace it if i did need to get a dust cover and a fibre washer, i suppose the fibre washer keeps the oil in too. any advce please.

It's my guess that the fibre washer and dust cap are there to keep muck away from the seal, not oil in. it'll run fine without them but you may notice reduced seal life..

Thats just an opinion, maybe someone else knows better.
