she's done 122k and my garage says it will cost 800 quid for a major service and timing belt change? I didn't think mine had a timing belt. Is this cost about right? Help needed before i get ripped off

most of the servicing on a disco can be done by yourself, as for the timing belt change, that is something that I would leave to a professional, cos if it goes pete tong then you can blame them, but oils and filters try to do yourself to keep the cost down on your service

If you are talking LR Dealership a "major" service is not just changing the oils and filters. I'm not condoning the price, nor necessarily what they do, and after me posting this your post will turn into a discussion about dealers ripping people off. But.......
The "major" service will include checking everything that is listed on the service schedual, seat belt mounting points, brakes, engine mountings, etc, etc, etc, the mechanic will spend about an hour walking around underneath the car with a pry bar checking for wear and tear.
Cam belt will cost around £350. At the end of the service you'll get a list of advisory's, you then decide whether or not you want the work done by them over a period of time, or whether you want to shop around or even do some yourself.
If this price is not a main dealer then you may as well go to one cos that is about what they'll charge you.
That's poked the old hornet's nest, metaphorically speaking.

I know what you mean. I have been stung so many times by garages claiming to be 4x4 specialists or land rover experts with cheaper prices than dealers. Thanks for the heads up thou

If you have done any work on cars in the past then servicing your 200 tdi will be a doddle. Filters are obvious and there are two on the fuel line. One is under the bonnet which unscrews by hand, fuel is pumped up to the filter by loosening the bleed screw on the filter head and priming with the small lever on the fuel pump on the side of the engine, sometimes you may need to rotate the engine half a turn to get the hand pumping action to work. The second fuel filter or more correctly sedimenter is above the rear axle....ish. It has a plastic drain plug just let out any water and retighten. Sometimes they need dismantling and cleaning out properly.
Oil and air filters simple to do (a couple of different types on 200 tdi), make sure you get a grease gun for the propshafts and swivel joints behind the front hubs.
The rest is simple tappets, handbrake, footbrake checks ect, do not be frightened by this car. If you have done timing belts before then there are no secrets here, just make sure the crank bolt is renewed and tightened properly.
Any doubt whatsoever on the timing belt then leave it to someone in the know.
This along with the early 300 tdis are the best discoveries to be owned/worked on by the diy mechanic.

My local specialist charged me £180 for a cambelt fitted, and another £150 for a full service .
