View Full Version : Disco 1 rear door stuck - not the usual issues

Hi,
The rear door on my discovery 1 is stuck. It won't open and it won't close.
I have been through the threads here, sprayed wd40 under the handle, cleaned it out, checked child locks, taken inside cover off, tried every combination of pulling, pushing, turning keys and pulling handles etc...so now I am here.

Because the door won't close properly I am leaning towards it being a loose screw on the guide plate above the lock that is preventing the door from closing, but the door has latched on the lock peg/stub, so won't open either. One of the 2 screws on the inside of the plate was loose. I have managed to tighten that, but can't get at any others there may be.

Any suggestions ? Anyone been here before?

Is there a way of freeing the lock - similar to when the door doesn't close properly, but latches and you push the door closed with your shoulder to free the lock mechanism..?

Reluctant to drive it at the moment in this condition.

Thanks
Greg

I take it you mean the rear door/boot door? if so I had to sort a similar problem on my brothers disco, I took the inside door panel off and managed to eventually manually force the lock mech,

With the door open, does the latch that locks over the door pin operate when you use the key or central locking? This latch has a habit of jamming due to general crud. If its not moving it should, if it locks in door open position use a large screw driver to release.
Clean all the muck out and give a good dose of WD40.
You might be lucky

Just a thought
If it is the latch that has seized you can often free them by banging very hard with your hand on the outside of the door at the lock position. It can bounce the latch free. Don't forget to put the lock in the open position first.

Had this on the passenger door on the disco I bought recently.. It wouldn't shut and the locks didn't work..

I stripped everything out and it turned out to be the latch jammed with crud.. free'd it up on the bench and soaked it in oil, and its all working fine now :)

do you have the doo card off?

do you have a rave cd?

on the body work manual goto the locks section. (page 76 on mine)

remove the inner door pull rod (item number on the page is 3)
remove the lock mechanisam parts nos (6,8,5 and all the rods to it)
with all that removed on the opposit side of where you fit the inner door rod to the mecanisam slide your hand down close to and close to the door catch area, you will feel a stud abuot 5-7mm long (you may be able to see it with a mirror and torch) ig gose from the insde of the lock and has a lip at the end pointing toward the outer door skin (if its clean i think its is silver) you need to pop that up with a bar or screw driver about 10 to 15mm that should pop the catch open.

hay presto the door is open.

now take the lock back out and inspect it.

at the end the lip that is on that stud there is a metel bar that is semi circular on the bottom this should be on top of the stud not below it

i had this issue when i changed the spring it poped off and allowed me to shut the door but not open it, i pryed it back over with the aid of a screw driver.

if it aint that you got the door open again.

while it is out clean and lubricate it, refit it and all th components then test it a few times with a scredriver to close it before you shut the door.

i hope this helps
cheers baz

oh yes a warning

mind the sharp edges and you may need a pice of wood to use as a pivot point for the bar/screwdriver

mine wasnt hard to pop open but maybe if crudy

cheers

Thankyou for your advice and suggestions.

Russ3120 - yep, done that. 3 days running actually, each time you think, this might just be the day.

Nicedayforit - With the door open, does the latch that locks over the door pin operate when you use the key or central locking? - Door won't open! That is the problem. Thanks anyway, yes, when it was open it was all working OK. I stripped it back in the summer to fit a new spring.

Discodude (baz) - I will have a go at this. I am out of the country until Monday but will give it a go. I don't have a rave cd but do have a layout of the lock from the haynes book of lies. I may be able to borrow a rave cd though. Have spent quite a while with my hand inside that door panel that I may consider gyneacology after this.

Also consider parking one of the rear wheels up a ramp, if that does not help try the other rear wheel. My rear door jammed when I had the car parked on a bad slope, it seems there is some torsion twist placed on the body and affects the door striker position.

This problem only occured because the door lock was not set properly on level ground.

Thanks to all who gave of their time to offer a solution.
After contorting myself on my back trying to view the lock mechanism with a mirror, still couldn't get the door open....that was until Tuesday when I enlisted the help of Dan and with brute force the job was done.
Turned out it was a loose screw jamming the door locator plate. A lever on the outside and a load of kicking on the inside and the door was released.

Loctite on the screws now.
Thanks one and all.
