hi there!

i had a 2000 1.8 freelander a couple of years ago but had to sell it because of work:(

but now i am in a position where can get one again!

i have been looking at td4 auto's, but in my search i have come across a 1.8 03 plate for not a lot of money as you can guess. it says it has been fitted with a new type of gasket so that it will not go again, is this true?

or shall i just keep looking for a td4

many thanks

I know a few people who swear by a well reapred 1.8, and have never had any other problems with HGF. But it's no guarantee, especially if you don;t know first hand about the quality of the work.

TD4 auto is a good car, as is the manual. Auto is easier for off roading and towing, but at the end of the day it is down to preference.

Cheers

Hi I recently bought a 1.8 freelander as I have always wanted a freelander, after all the not so friendly advice about headgasket failure, cooling system, inlet manifold, I decided it was in very good condition so I bought it... the downside was 5 days, 132 miles later I had it recovered by the AA recovery service ..oops..! well very cheesed off I found a guy that races MGZR's with the K-series engine who thrashes his cars on the circuits, the upside is he stripped and rebuilt the engine with the new layerd ,"he states race gasket" and also added new clutch as engine was out and made sense to do this.. I have since run the freelander in gor 600 - 700 miles and drives lovely and am very happy with it... I guess if you get the right mechanic and he knows the k Series engine very well ..you might be on a winner...

To be honest. People always say "get the TD4!" but if you look down the forum recently then you will see more problems posted with the TD4 engine than the 1.8K series. Yes the 1.8 has a head gasket issue but just think of it as a 40,000-60,000 service! lol
I am 100% happy with my 1.8 (although a little under powered) and apart from the head gasket they dont really have any issues.

I have a neigbour on my culdasac that has a TD4 and I think Im gonna knock and ask If I can take his for a drive to see if I can compare differances between his TD4 and my 1.8 ,,. I have been very careful not to put my 1.8 thru its paces as only done maybe 1200 miles since rebuild but I do find it under powered only compared to my 1.8 MGTF which is understandable but 1.8 or not I absolutely love driving the freelander such a pleasure just have the window mechanism problems to deal with now.

Don't forget the auto pays more VED. One group higher than the manual.
The 1.8 hasn't got the torque of a TD4.

Hi!
I'm on my 3rd Freelander, but this is the first Td4 auto. It's an 05 plate and I bought when it was 1 year old. Have had 3 years trouble free motoring and have put 70k km on the clock.
DON'T even think of the 1.8
Td4 auto is great (mine has tiptronic):)

thanks for all of your replies, i think i have made my mind up and its got to be a td4.

i used to have a 1.8 and i always thought it needed a bit more power but i still loved driving it. much better then my truck at the moment.

hopefully i'm going to look at a few tomorrow morning.... has anybody brought from this garage http://www.surrey4x4.co.uk/8721/surrey.htm

The only problem with the 1.8 is that when the revised road tax really starts those first registered from March 2001 (Y-reg) onwards will get hammered. Worth considering if your going to pay over £400 a year for road tax on a 1.8, luckily ours is X-reg so its not affected!

Try looking at the above site and see!

I had already checked this Tax issues on my 1.8 es 5dr. 2002 on a 51 plate . on another website and it said as of april 2010 it will stand at £430 for 12 months.
http://www.nicedeals.co.uk/taxsheet.php?der=19427&nam=Land%20Rover&mod=Freelander%20Station%20Wagon%20(98-03)&nam5=1.8%20ES%205d

just checked yr link and it states 2010 will be £245. 12 months tax ..

http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/road-tax/?deriv=19427

This is really confusing.. same vehicle £185 differance in Tax..

Im renewing mine this week and its currently £210 12 months
