Hi, I'm a new member tried to post a minute ago and it go 'lost' before I'd finished so if you see in unfinished post somewhere in here it's probably mine. What I have to say will surprise no-one in this forum. I bought a 53 plate freelander 1.8 petrol Kalihari 5 door. I've had it 6 months, it has a full service history and the head gasket had just given up, only warning I got was a cold heater and no coolant in the reservoir. It's only just into 45000 miles. Had I been aware of this forum before I bought it I would have bought something else. £500 to fix and that will include the water pump, timing belt head skimmed, new gasket and a service. A reasonable price I think because one year ago it cost me just over £1000 to have the same work done on an Alfa 156 1.8 petrol and that was without a service. Now here is a bit of advice in case the incident I am going to mention happens to you. I had the car for only one week when a gradually louder clicking/knocking noise came from the front underside of the car every time I applied the brakes at junctions as I was slowing down. The noise would disappear when I pressed the clutch pedal so I though it would be gearbox related due to it going away when I pressed the clutch. I had the car checked by the retailer and it turned out to be the catalyser breaking up, fitted a new cat and the problem was solved.
