Well OK, maybe not an expedition as such, but planning a trip to the Alps for a bit of snow sports. Wondering whether anyone's got any experience of snow chains and where to get them from, want decent(ish) ones but not too expensive.

Getting excited about being on the road again!! :D

Probably should have asked first but, are they even worth having? Planning to probably drive to Chamonix and then maybe head out for a couple of little trips, not sure where, although almost certainly all on sealed roads.

I happen to know where there is a set of KWB Ketten snow chains that are in a handy land rover size that your welcome to borrow and return after the trip if you dont want to go buying any, but would feel more comfortable with a set in the motor...

Sounds good, thanks! Whereabouts in the country are you?

I guess youve used them at some point then - did you find they made much of a difference? Did a bit of reading last night and people seem to think putting chains on the front wheels is enough on a 4x4.

Its enough until the front wheels start to slip.

Landrover recommend NOT using snow chains on the rear of a disco 3.
I'd love to know why?

just curious and off topic. i skiied first time this holiday in canada and heard there is a skii slope in milton keynes. does anyone know if it is any good or if there are any other slopes closer than scotland and france?

The best place to buy them is in France, assuming that you can get the correct size, they are not grossly overpriced over there like here. I saw them in the Carrefour in Cherbourg just before Christmas.
Also, I believe that in certain areas, ie the mountain areas you have to either carry chains in the car, or maybe it was in certain situations you had to have them fitted, can't remember the exact requirement right now.
