Am I right in saying that the 2001 onward freelander had an IRD with a different ratio to the early models?

Yes, not so great a difference.

When your sitting at 70mph whats your RPM at ?

If its around 3300rpm then you've got the older version IRD with the ratio error/fault that causes the overload on VCU, but if its 3000rpm or below then the original has already been replaced with the updated version at some point before.
