Hi All,

I'm fairly new to owning my D2 4.0 V8 1999, - just after i got it the 3 amigos came on - my local garage changed the F/O/S abs sensor and loom this cleared the fault for a while now I've got the traction control coming on when i turn right or go over a pot hole ?? it seems to be the N/S/F which is activating. if i drive with an on/off attitude with the throttle it does not happen as much which presume is down to not having drive all the time (When throttle off etc) - now after driving for a short time the 3 amigos come on and obviously the traction control/abs no longer works, if i stop turn off and re start all the lights go out after moving off but then the traction control problem re starts.

now after much reading on this site I've come to the conclusion that I've either got another sensor problem N/S/F or a bearing with play or i need to replace the ECU.

I'm not hugely spanner tastic and don't want to be ripped off by my local independent garage or LR garage if it's a sensor fine they can replace that but if it's play in a wheel bearing can this be adjusted or do they have to be replaced ?? if it's the ECU do i need to get new one or are there second hand ones available or can mine be repaired ?? also with the ecu are they Vehicle specific i guess for petrol but do they have to be ordered to your vehicle spec ie: air con, air suspension, etc etc.

let me have you views guys it would be appreciated

Sorry about the late delay.

Lets start with the SLABS (ecu). Its very unlikely to be this so rule it out for the time being.
More than likely your bearings are on there way out. you will know if they have shattered as they whine like normal cars bearings. either way this unfortunitly means a hub change. 1 advantage is that the hubs come with new sensors, but they do cost around £200 and fitters will charge you about the same for labour. Either get it dianoses by landrover or find someone near to you off this forum to look at it for you first as it'll probably be just the one.
If you are in the Northeast then I can look at it for you.
(ps helps if you put a general location in your profile).

Hi Nick,

that's for the reply, I'm in the Heathrow area - I've not got round to setting up my profile properly yet.

I've go no whine at all, as I've mentioned are the bearings adjustable on Disco's as I've got a free weekend coming up and i'm going to have a looksee.

It seems odd that it just does it over bumps in the road or turning right under power.

Unfortunately they're not adjustable. Not even replaceable. They are pre pressed into the hub and sold as a solid unit. Here is a picture of it.

You wont get a whine until they shatter, then they are well annoying.
Keep us updated.

Some of us arent bolted to the internet ! You really need to get the codes read on Testbook or similar - they are more accurate than most will admit too.The TC lamp coming on alone is a bit of a worry, there were software issues on early cars like yours,so a hub may not be the total answer.Have a look at the part # on the Slabs ECU, tell us what it is.

I had mine put on a Land Rover diagnostic, which showed a F/O/S sensor failure. Stripped it today to replace sensor, only to find end of sensor mangled. Close inspection revealed ABS ring chewed up, which I can only assume is the wheel bearing failing? Ordered a new hub and sensor today, will let you know how it goes. Only significant issue is the hub nut has to be tightened to 362lb/ft torque and I haven't got a torque wrench that goes that high!
