Ok

So first and 5th gear are broken 800 miles in to owning the car (assumed broken main shaft I am told) but the car before I bought it was supposed to have had a replacement gearbox R380..... If it was replaced would a main shaft replacement be a normal replacement as part of a transmission overhaul?

Is this terminal/worth repairing or am I best to buy a service exchange one? How long/difficult a job is it to fit a new gearbox/mainshaft bearing in mind I am not massively tooled up and would have to do it on the drive!

Also who is a good operator for replacement gearboxes ideally North East based so that I don't have to pay haulage each way?

Cheers

The the best place to get a recon box from is these lot.

But if you have just bought the car did you buy it private or dealer.

Hope this helps.Lawson

1st and 5th are either side of the main, rear casing of the gearbox, not at different ends, so it could be a collapsed bearing. If the mainshaft had broken, you wouldn't get drive out of the box in most gears. Probably just 5th and reverse as they are not in the main box and use the layshaft.

Unfortunately bought private from a friend of a friend who assured me it was in good order, had received a replacement gearbox and was very reliable. Has so far received discs and pads all round and needs timing belt kit, starter motor, heater plugs, bigger battery, two tyres and now apparently a gearbox within not many miles!!

It just appeared to pop out of gear doing about 65mph on the A1 no noise or anything.

Presumably it is not possible to tell without dropping the gearbox out and dismantling. I am not very mechanically minded so would appreciate any advice!!

You could drain the oil and see if there are any big bits of oil in it other than that its a strip down to find the problem. Lawson
