View Full Version : sudden tick tick tick sounding engine

I have a 97 Disco 1 (V8i). I was driving the other day and as the trip passed, there was ticking sound coming from the engine that got louder and louder as time passed. The noise was coming from the top of the engine somewhere. I noticed a vacuum hose that runs from the top part of the engine. The rectangular block on top of the engine that has the (4.0) cast into it. The hose that runs from there to the valve cover (passenger side) had collapsed. I am assuming that the hose needs to be replaced. Through further research, I understand that deals with oil distribution somehow. I ordered a PCV kit to hopefully fix the problem.
Will this ticking noise go away after I change the oil and replace PCV hoses or is this ticking sound from another potential problem? :banghead:
Thank you.

The tappets on the Rover v8 are hydraulically operated and anything which affects your oil pressure will affect them (plus other parts of the engine) . It could be this that is tapping. Or some other things, some of the engineers on the forum will no doubt be able to give you better advice. Make sure your oil pressure is what it should be as well and get the pipe changed ASAP. Maybe someone with a V8 will tell you exactly what the pipe is for.

The hose carries oil vapour from the rocker cover to be burnt rather than vented to the atmosphere. I can't think of a reason for it to cause a ticking noise though...
Other reasons for top end noise on a V8 include a loose/arcing ignition lead or cracked exhaust manifold.

Or, a faulty fuel injector they tick any way when they are opening and closing. A worn camshaft will cause a very loud ticking

My 97 Disco 1 has about 78,000 miles on it. The dipstick shows the oil level to be fine. At first the ticking would start when the engine got hot, but I started it the other day and it was ticking from cold. I hope this isn't a serious problem. Here on the island we can't drive over 30mph. The stress on the engine at high speed isn't a factor. The ticking is roughly 2-3 ticks a second, if that helps. It was recommended to change the oil when the PCV hoses are changed.
Hope this helps.

Or, could be a leaking exhaust manifold gasket.
