Hi,

I have a '96 Disco 1 auto. It says in the manual that 'positions' 1, 2 and 3 should be used for engine braking on hill descents. I have tried this, but the vehicle just 'runs away'. Am I doing something wrong?

Cheers,

Chris.

If you are talking on road, No you will have to touch your brakes now and again although off road you would use the lower ratios in the transfer box.

Understood. I guess if I keep the Landy in 'D'rive, it would just keep adjusting as the downhill speed picked-up. So is 3rd or 1st the best braking? I'm guessing 1st, like on a manual box.

Chhers,

Chris.

Hi Chris,

If you drive down a road in D the car will pick up speed and go through the gears. If you are in 3rd, 2nd, or 1st, the engine revs will go higher, as will speed, but it will stay in that gear, hence keep the speed lower than if you were in drive.

It's not foolproof, ie, you still need to apply your foot brake from time to time to slow the car down.

Hope this helps,

J

If you were in a manual gearbox car and wanted engine braking, what would you do?

You'd change down wouldn't you? That's what you do in an auto as well.

If you select 3, what it means is that the autobox will go through the gears 'til it gets to 3 and will stay there, i won't go into top (4), same with selecting 2 and 1.

So depending on how much engine braking you need, you select the appropriate gear, just like you would in a manual and use your brakes when neccesary, just like in a manual.
