View Full Version : Defender spares while abroad

We have a Defender CSW 110 Td5 (2005) which we plan to drive from Oman to Mexico. The route will be UAE-Saudi etc.-Turkey- Bulgaria or Greece; through Europe to the UK; ship to Argentina; through South and Central America, probably shipping from Ecuador to Panama. Once in Mexico, the vehicle would stay there long-term.

I'm concerned about the matter of spares and repairs; while we plan to take a good selection of the former, one obviously cannot take everything that might be needed. (It is at this point that I wonder if the trip should be done in that "other vehicle"; clue: it's made in Japan and spare parts/repair knowledge are -compared with Landrover -to be found at almost every lane-end; but too late for that.) I'm particularly concerned, perhaps, about the fact that the Defender isn't sold in Mexico and am not sure about the feasability of being there with it long term.

I would like to hear about others' experiences in this or that country, particularly the ones we'll be going through, in getting hold of spare parts for the Defender (or other Landrover) and getting repairs done while on the road. In South and Central America, for example, there might in certain places be mechanics who, while not working at LR dealer outlets, have gained experience and knowledge of Landrovers. As for spares, getting something shipped out might be possible, but in terms of time, money and red tape that is not likely to be a welcome option.

Maybe we could make this into a "sticky" so any information stays around for others in the same boat. Maybe even a country-by-country/region-by-region guide.

Sorry, I can't help you with any info about south and central America, but there's an old joke about Landies in Africa that might be equally at home in South America:

Q) Why can you find Landrover parts anywhere in Africa?

A) Because you need them.

Have you thought of making contact with the Land Rover dealers/centres in Central USA? Maybe they can shed some light...or at least ship parts South if needs be?

These guys are my local parts suppliers, whether I'm in the UK or Spain. I've never had a single problem, and they're very helpful. Also aware of the britpart plague... They're not always the cheapest but very reasonable, never overpriced and will ship to anywhere in the world. I wouldn't recommend buying online as it can be confusing, and also if you phone them they often knock off some of the price and give you options between different pattern manufacturers and genuine.
