Hi, all.
A bit of rust is starting to "speckle" through on my front bumper (1996, so not bad). I've got some Kurust (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_18 8249_langId_-1_categoryId_165594), which I can apply, but wondered what was best to get the original look of the black coating?
Anyone tried anything that they ended-up being pleased with?
Cheers,
Chris.

Wire brush the rust back to good metal, sand entire surface and paint with Matt Black Plastikote spray!
:) Thats what I would do.

Halfords seems a bit more straight forward, the Plasti-kote site is a bit arty :-).

Silly question, but from the Halfords links above, should I be getting the Matt, Gloss or satin? I'm guessing satin.
Anyone know?
Cheers,
Chris.

Yeah definately satin - I did my roof rails with it and it looked great

Chris.

:D:D Defo Plasticote for me, halfords 25miles, B&Q 7 miles, and I've got an old fart's card for even more cheapness!
No brainer really!
Good luck with it!

Nom I'm thinking I should go for matt. If i do silk, will all the rest of my bumper look funny. I didn't think the rest was matt, but not sure how shiny silk is, in comparison.
Will also do roof bars.

Scott,
I had a look at my bumper and I think I'll go for the silk. Did you rub yours down to bare metal (;-))? B&Q tomorrow lunchtime I think, and then work out the best way to mask around the area.
Cheer for the photo offer.
Chris.

No - once you sand the rust spots and kurust it if theres any little dimples use a hi-build primer to create the same level as surrounding and give the rest a good key with a scotchbrite pad - any extra prep work is always worth doing when spraying - gives a better finish ! Good luck - let us know how you get on !

Hi, all.
Job done!
Due to inclement weather, I did not does as much sanding as I should have, but I am happy with the results. The black satin is a good choice.
Apart from the prep, the only thing i'd have done differently is buy a more coarse sander, to rub down. The fine can be used to finish off, but because I didn't go to B&Q to rectify my buying choice, I have a slightly uneven base.
Basically, I sanded down, applied Kurust, attached masking- just used masking tape, no paper, sprayed two coats of spray.
The quality of the pics isn't great i'm afraid. The "after" one should have been better, but the weather was 'coming-in'.
Any tips on the best way to easily mask around the roof bars?
8< Edit: I attached the large photos first, but they were too big. I reduced them and submitted. For some reason the forum took the ones that were too big, anyway, and reduced them itself. Sorry for the duplication.
Cheers,
Chris.

Thanks for the pictures, in fact the whole topic. I've a winch bumper on a Defender that's peeling back to the metal.
I was considering hand painting it with Hammerite smooth satin Black.
Has anyone else used this?

Not meaning to be nasty mate, but personally I think it looked better before you sprayed it!

Afraid so, should have stripped it right back or built it up. It looks like the rust will be through in no time.

My 97 was still perfect apart from a slight bend- until I straitened it with a 7lb sledge hammer, dented it from the inside out now the rust is getting in!:(
A very tough standard front bumper tho, I beat the c*#p out of it and it hardly moved!
