Just a thought!, flexible joint on downpipe, is there any sign of blackening around the outer braid, suggesting a leak? Turbo pipe leaking?

Hi could possibly be exhaust manifold studs they are bad for snapping and they cause quite a loud blowing noise.Lawson

Not wanting to scare you but I think my td5 made a noise like that before the oil pump sprocket fell off, due to the bolt working loose due to Land Rover's inconsistent policy on application of Loctite 242. If you get an oil pressure warning light- stop the engine ASAP, aand get it towed away.
It's not too difficult to drop the sump and check the bolt for tightness; better still, remove it and apply Loctite: I wish someone on the Disco II forum had warned me.
Hey, if I'm wrong, sorry, but I did remember an odd noise. Better safe than sorry.
'99 Disco II EU2 type td5. It happened a month ago.

hi there thanks for the advice ill definetly have a look at that , is it actually in the sump then, does it have a torque setting or is it just loctite and f*****g tight.

not that f***ing tight; in fact the torque wrench I borrowed didn't go low enough: it's 25Nm metric or 18lbf.ft in inchric. The Loctite should do the job, anyway. As I said, I may be wrong, but having just suffered it and had to pay 500€ for a new oil pump/stiffener plate assembly, I would rather have done the sump-off job, even if it hadn't been necessary. Oil pump is on the port side, forward, easily visible once sump has been dropped a bit. I've seen forums on the web where people a few years ago were saying there weren't likely to be any more cases of this stock fault. Wrong!!

Yep, they do sometimes sound a bit like a turbo winding up. Could the noise be from your tyres?, I have a 'whine' from the tyres on very smooth road surfaces(rib type tread road pattern).

hi donny thanks for your reply , i think it could be the rotor, sounds like it , wont hurt to change it anyway , dont think its the tyres as noise seems to have been gettin worse gradually.......cheers

As Willie says, intercoolers split and make a noise. We've changed quite a few on L322s, BMWs and Renaults.
Look for traces of oil and bowed coolers. Split pipes and bad connections are worth looking at as well.

Been out in the disco today towing a trailer , sounds more like a scraping hiss if you know what i mean coming from either the gbox or engine but only under load ,more or less the same time as when the turbo kicks in , checked intercooler and pipes all seem good ,

hi you might not be able to see were the air is coming from but if you remove the intercooler you can test it if you have the gear to do so or you can get it tested easily
