View Full Version : Rear diff seal

There is a leak coming from the rear diff on a friends 200TDI discovery. The leak itself is coming from the front of the diff where the prop shaft is bolted to the diff, there appears to be some kind of seal pressed into the diff housing, oil is leaking from the bottom of here.

Can anyone tell me how easy it is to change this seal, and what would need to be removed to do it?

Lastly-what is the correct name for the seal so I don't sound like a complete tool when ordering it from the local motor factors!

Thanks-Simon

Think he means the pinion oil seal http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/DISCOVERY_1/Axle/Diff_seal_for_4_bolt_flange_diff_-_rear_axle_non_ABS_from_JA032851.html (http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/RANGE_ROVER_1986-1994/Axle/Diff_seal_-_rear_axle_non_ABS.html)

I have to replace my "Diff Pinion Oil Seal" sometime. Its best to get the Gen LR part although it will cost you £8 +vat, then you won't be replacing it again next year.

just done a pinion seal

it`s a fairly easy job, just awkward when under the truck

prop off
remove flange, mine had a castlated 30mm nut holding it on
remove old seal
fit new seal
flange back on
prop back on
check oil levels

Thanks for all the replies, the last one was particularly helpful! It looks like a reasonably straight forward job!
