Vicky where do you live?

That is rediculous, its like the banning of nativity scenes at christmas incase it offends someone from a different religious/ethnic background.

This is Political correctness gone mad:Cross:

I was chatting with my brother in law over christmas, he has been working abroad over the last 4 years, he said that in 6 weeks being back in the coutry he has noticed people who he knows are not racist and would consider to be very tollerent people were starting to complain about this sort of issue.

His concern was that if ratioanl people are starting to get wound up by this sort of thing then the less tollerent people out there could be taking things to another level! He strongly beleives that this could come to a head in a few years.

He certainly got me thinking:dunno1:

Yes Happy St George's day one and all! For England, Harry and St George!

For a bonus point can anyone tell me the name of the patron aint of England before it was St George? Answers on a postcard to....

And PLEASE see the thread at the top of the lists marked 'A Birthday Appeal' and donate what you can, even if it os only the price of a beer and a pack of fags. Celebrate St Georges day by helping preserve something for future generations to see just how great this nation once was and just how great it can be again.

Happy St Georges Day and Happy Birthday Medway Queen, 80 years today!

Hi Jon,
It's not in the town I live in, but my colleague lives in The Black Country.
I think your brother in law is right, I've never concidered myself racist, but things like that really get my back up.

A very happy St. George's Day to one and all!

Screwloose, if my old history master was correct it was Edward the Confessor, St.George took over as Patron Saint in 1350.

He is also the Patron Saint
of Barcelona in Catalonia, Aragon, Russia, Bavaria, Beirut,
Czechoslovakia, Portugal, Lithuania and Hungary, to name but a few.

"If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.
And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven".

FOR ENGLAND AND ST JONNY

Rugby hero Jonny Wilkinson has been praised for kick-starting a renewed passion for St George's Day.

England's World Cup success is thought to be behind what will be one of the most celebrated national days in the country's history.

But a survey also suggests the English are more torn than their British neighbours over feelings of Englishness and Britishness.

While the Scots and Welsh are more likely to rally behind their national flags, the English are caught between the Cross of St George and Union flag.

In Scotland, 77% claim their main loyalty is to the blue and white of St Andrew with just 29% behind the Union flag.

And 65% of the Welsh opted to back the flag of St David rather than the British equivalent.

But the poll showed 69% of English people said their main allegiance was to the Union flag and only one fifth to the Cross of St George.

Across England, the greatest loyalty to the cross was shown by the over 50s but it was least popular with those in their 20s.

Just 3% of the 2,000 Britons, surveyed for the Morgan Stanley Credit Card poll, gave their main support for the European Union flag.

This rose to 14% in London, although a further 11% of those in the capital said they had no allegiance to any of the flags.

So thats DEANO, Screwloose, and who else waving the wrong flag :hugegrin:

Me and my computer are well into our St. George's Day party now. Pint of bitter in my tankard, Elgar playing on the CD, and Land Rover forum on the screen.

Makes one proud of the British Empire:Countdown

J.S Bach in a bit.

Did you know he ******ed off to the local pub during the sermon in his place of worship he was employed in at the time?

I have always wondered how he knew what time to get back to his organ (musical instrument) whilst having a sup:dunno1:

Tony and I were talking about that the other day and ended up discussing how many folks are as patriotic of their County as Tykes are. He admitted he says he's English before he says he's from Worcestershire, but I say I'm from Yorkshire before I say I'm from England, so what way round do you lot say it?

Vicky, i'm with you on this one. We had more or less the same sort of conversation at my brothers house last week. Our respective partners (southerners) find it hard at times to understand the pride we have for our county. With almost the same breath, my brother and i replied "yorkshireman" when asked what we classed as our "nationality".
Although i respect others wishes to celebrate St Georges Day, i personally don't, However the 1st of August sees me wearing my white rose with pride.

Vicky, I'm with Tony on this one. I'm an Englishman who happens to come from Kent. Despite the general opinion that Southerners do not care about their country nearly all of my chums (how very English!) are fiercely proud of their heritage. As a member of The Royal Society of St.George I would say that wouldn't I?
