Jaguar workers set to accept four-day week

Workers at Jaguar Land Rover look set to accept company proposals for a pay freeze and a reduction in hours in return for no compulsory job losses for 18 months.

Under the proposals, staff will work a four-day week by cutting their hours from 35 a week to 32, and pay rises will be put on hold until October 2010.

The company’s 15,000-strong workforce will vote on the proposal in the next week, but they are expected to give them overwhelming support.

Only if you work in manufacturing.. the rest of the company has to increase the number of hours they do for no extra pay...

I'd say that any news on the manufacturing front is definitely good news.

Not quite right, but along those lines.

The Deal, which is currently being balloted on is asking for these items to be accepted:-

Reduced working week down from 36 to 35 Hours
Full Mobility across West Midland sites - Solihull>Castle Bromwich>Browns Lane>Gaydon>Whitley>MIRA (This already exist at Solihull!).

Pay Freeze until 1st November 2010

Salaried Employees Working week (Current 37 hours, requested to work 40 for no extra pay).

Individual Performance Pay (D Grades earn a bonus for volume created)
They will have this years paid 50% and next years paid 50% of total.

Associate Development Scheme/Your Time (Assisted learning scheme, where any associate can learn a new skill and the company pay £100 towards it). Suspended indefinitely.

Pension Contribution increased by 1% (Extra £2.99 for an A grade associate).

Salary Sacrifice Arrangement (A sort of tax dodge where the company skim the interest accrued before paying the treasury!

Agency Hire rates (Halewood) reduced to 80% on any temporary labour bought in.

It doesn't seem so bad when you have been asked to chip in to stave off redundancies, however the news from China, although brilliant, the timing could not have happened at a worst time, the ballot could be lost on this news alone.

All production associates have already lost huge sums of money by having no shift allowances, add to that the cats who earnt substantially more by working overtime in some areas.

Now asked to lose an hours pay+pension+pay rise equates to about £40 per week.

The company are making a bold statement by saying No Compulsory redundancies over the next two years, however, what isn't been publicised is the possibility of this promise being reneged on should the credit situation deteriorate.

Whilst these proposed agreement changes are in effect for 2 years, the mobilty agreement will remain forever, something the company have tried unsuccessfully to implement for a number of years.

Hope this doesn't come acros as anti-JLR, but if something is wrongly quoted, then the facts need to be told.

Not quite right, but along those lines.

It was a press release from Jaguar Land Rover, so you will have seen the same story line through nearly all the press... :)

The details always are more complex...
