Has anyone out there got any comments/suggestions as to a decent air filter for a Disco V8? The air filter housing on my '96 V8 does not look adequate for the engine to "breathe" properly. I am not talking about filter replacement only, but rather the entire housing with something better?

As you were asking about power the other day can I assume you after a few more ponies from your V8?

Basic bolt on rules are - improve air in and gas flow out.

The more air you get in and the colder it is the better. However remember Land Rover air boxes are designed for a degree of off roading and help to prevent water making its way to the engine, so you might want to bear this in mind.

Most people will probably tell you K&N - but for no other reason than its just a big name brand that they know of.

Personally I'm not that keen on K&N, or any cotton weave filter - from a technical stand point anyhow.

Basically they achieve greater airflow by reducing filtering ability. And after all isn't an air filters prime purpose to filter?

In reality they probably don't do any real harm, unless you use the vehicle in very harsh dusty conditions.

Other things I don't like about K&N is the high initial purchase price the fact you then need to clean it often (more often than you need to change a paper filter. It doesn't take much for a K&N to flow less than a paper filter) which means more long term expense.

You have to oil the filter to prevent water ingression, over oiling is easy and can ****** up your MAF.

The best filters I know of are Donaldson composite weave, even air craft engines use them. But they are pricey and don't always sell what you want.

Some foam filters are very good, I like the ITG ones and some of the Pipercross ones. Be careful some cheap foam filters are useless and should be avoided, so stick to well known brands. And run a mile or two from anyone who tries to flog you a metal mesh filter!!!!!

Personally I think you should get a large cone filter (as big as surface area as possible) and make sure the tubing bore is as big as possible (or least no smaller than stock). Its your choice if you go for foam or cotton weave (while I do diss the K&N's they really aren't as bad as I make out, so they are worth considering).

There may be some kits out there, if not buy a universal kit of suitable size and fit it yourself. The easiest way is replace everything past the MAF, if you want to get more complex you could do more but its a much bigger job.

For performance a cold air feed would be of benefit, but remember off roading, usually a cold air feed would be from in front of the rad or a wheel arch, but these are all potential sources of mud and water on a 4x4. So maybe some form of snorkel arrangement would better suit.

If you are wanting more poke from the V8 then sadly an air intake will only provide so much.

If you want more performance you'll need to do a few more mods:

-free flow exhaust
-long tube exhaust headers (the longer the better)
-cam (have a look at Real Steel or V8 Developments)
-heads (V8 Developments)
-electric fan
-tune (possible need to switch to Megasquirt
-Supercharger
