Hi my names andy a couple of weeks ago i bought myself an n reg discovery 1 with 81000 on the clock now with almost 83000 as i do a lot of miles . It had a small oil leak that i believed to be coming from the engine, but started to worry when the leak almost disappeared and engine oil level was fine. I have started to hear a noise when coming off the accelerator with gear still engaged it sounds like it might be bearings.
I dont hear this noise at any other time so the only thing i can think of is the gearbox oil is low and when accelerating the oil pressure is good
and oil is getting to all the parts ,but when i come off the accelerator the pressure is too low to get the oil around all the moving parts and now bearings or something else is fooked but im no mechanic so any help would be much appreciated
ps this has only happened in the last 50 miles
thanks andy

im not a mechanic by any means but it is a comon problem for these to go esp if u have it lifted??? they are usually around £30 for gen part. u can get some cheap ones that are not as hard or last as long but u can get some deals on e-bay??? if it is that check u have all the nuts and bolts still!!! sounds a bit stupid - but when they do go u can lose some!!
the reason i say check that is its an easy check - u will see if it is on the way out!! if it looks okay it prob is! it shouldn't have a lot of give in it at all.

Hi Andy, when you do the gearbox oil, make sure that you put in MTF94 oil, as that is specially formulated for manual gearboxes -DO NOT USE ATF - it's not good for the synchros in the box. You'll need 3 litres.
Also you might care to think about changing the oils in the transfer box and both front and rear axles. All of these take the same oil EP75/80-90 and you'll need 6 litres in total.

right small update on this . i didnt get round to changing the oil or having a look at it but had to go to the shop . i noticed that driving at 40/50 mph a change in the chamber of the road would result in a noise that sounds like the tyres were rubbing on the arch liner(you know what im talking about when the little chav down the road from you goes passed and he has 22" wheels and been lowered 60mm and his wheels are rubbing like hell, that kind of noise but was defo not that .
im thinking movement in propshaft but really dont know any help would be much appreciated
thanks andy

the plug is a wading plug, a couple of quid! and its retty self explanitory!!! not had one on mine but i've been told its a good idea to stop general crap getting in when in muddy water etc!
fluid around there??! check if it is clutch fluid, should be red ish but u will deff feel the difference between that and oil, if it's diff oil it will smell different to general engine oil. if it is clutch fluid it could be that ur clutch slave cylinder need replacing - about a tenner. if it is the slave u will feel the gears getting harder to select and prob notice a drop in fluid from the fluid top up. hope this helps!!! ben

just another note to say that the wading plug isn't missing - it's not normally there. from what i have been told u just screw it in for offroading and then take it off for normal use!??!

Nonononononono !!! Please do not put engine oil in your gearbox unless you want it wrecked !!!
The correct oil to use is MTF(Manual Transmission Fluid)94. You'll need 3ltrs max for a complete change. You might considor doing that as it was common practice to put ATF in, a while ago, and it's not the best thing for the 'box.
