Hi all , this problem started yesterday with my 2000 TD5 es, when I pulled out the ECU unit to check for oil on the wiring loom & ECU unit after she was running under powered on hill's etc, the loom plug & unit where full of oil, which I cleaned off with WD40!!! wrong ! when i plugged it all back in & sitched on the ignition, the hazards started flashing & all the dash lights came on & she wouldn't start. I was then advised on the thread to reclean everthing with quick drying pcb cleaner or similar which I've done today, but still when I put the unit back & refit the neg terminal etc the bloody hazards start flashing ! wont start & all dash lights on again ??
I'm wondering if the immobiliser could have kicked in ??? with the flashing lights & turning over but not starting , as it was fine until I unplugged it to check the loom ?
PLEASE HELP :( any adivce much appreciated !!!

Oh yeah !! also , once i've turned the ignition on & the hazards are flashing. They dont stop when I turn the ignition OFF, the only way to stop them is to take off the pos battery terminal ????

Not sure if this will help, but I would try the emergency door lock procedure, where you turn the lock one then t'other to input the security code that came with the vehicle.

It seems to me that the car is saying "someones attacking me - hhhhheeeelllppppppp !!!!"
So doing the door-lock procedure might just re-set things - hopefully??

Well got hold of dealer to get the code & did the EKA key code thing which reset the immobiliser but when getting in after the 5 min wait for it to reset, turnred the ignition to position II , AGAIN the hazards flash & the bloody thing still wont start ??? Stumped Again !!!
ANY Ideas ? :(

Not 100% sure on this but did you change the loom that was full of oil. I think you have to replace this as the oil will still be giving problems.
Change loom and then clean all connections.

This isnt the answer to your problem, but, when I changed my loom a couple of weeks ago,I didn't disconect any of the battery terminals, just changed the injector loom, cleaned the plug & socket on the ecu, plugged it all back in and away I went.
No problem.
Having said that, surely just disconecting the battery sould'nt cause the engine to not be able to start???
Don't loose faith.
Hopefully someone will reply with an answer soon.
Best of luck Marc.:D

Cheers sharky :) I'm about to go try again !!!! really wierd goings on though ! hate fault finding specially when it was supposed to be such a simple fix :o
keep you all informed ! oh I've ordered the harness too :) wont do any good if I cant figure out this hazard light no starting lark !

You'd be suprised Marc.
Very common and when a valetter pumps a load of water onto a body control unit, nothing does as it should.
We get problems with pitch cars when the battery drains and then they jump start it. Full of codes in all systems, blown fuses, ECUs need resetting.
I'd PM Jonv8, if he can't tell you what to do....

FIXED :o) yipeeeee !!!!! thank the Lord & thanks to all you lad's for your word's of wisedom & help ! , I've been kicking my own ass all morning ha! , but it seems I did everything right with the ECU oil/loom problem & like I said I've now ordered the new fuel harness & I'll fit that mid week when it arrives :o).
The problem was that I must have hit the "Inertia Switch" when I was checking the waste gate on the turbo !!!! " I DONT BELIEVE IT " springs to mind ! ha :o) & this causes the lockdown/ hazards flashing problem !
What a learning curve! I'm now an expert at taking out ECU's so if anyone need's a hand drop me a line ;O)
My next project will be to sort the sunroof leak before our trip to Macedonia in the summer
Thanks again boy's !!!!!

WELL DONE SKIPPY !!!!!
So pleased that you've got to the bottom of the problem and you're back running again.
Might take you up on the ECU support as I'm about to start work on my "new" TD5 and that will be one of the first jobs I'll tackle.
Again, well done !!!!
Cheers

:D No worries Chris, I'll be doing the fuel harness soon , but you've already got an excellent thread for that , but I will be doing the leaky sunroof challenge :p in the next month or so & I'll do an upload of the project.
It's the very least I could do after the great support & encouragement :D
Great & really helpfull advice ! amazing how much you learn on these projects :p
thanks again to all the "boy's" :D

Cheer's Dave :D Would be a pleasure ! A tip , would be to get a tin of PCB Cleaner , I got mine from P.C world :o it works a treat ! Also looking @doing the EGR blanking plate conversion thingy, seems like a good move to stop all the oily gunk going into the manifold.
thanks again :o
Skippy
let me know if you need some advice though :D

Well done - makes my reply to your post on a different thread a bit wasteful.
Where did you get the replacement harness from (new/2nd hand?). I think I will have to do the same - gets a bit expensive replacing the chipped ECU.
Did the new harness have better sealing than the one you took out?
Any info you can supply will be great as I have a wife who has renamed the car Dudley (because of these problems) and is making "Nissan" noises. ):

Hiya Langley ;o)
Dead easy job thankfully ! I got my harness from e bay quite cheap I think
+ - 20-30 squid. It did make a difference to the oil seeping down the loom with the new o rings on the fitting from the rocker cover ! Once you've initially done the first clean up you need to give it a few more cleans ;o) to get rid of the residual oil in the loom! It's a five minute job once you've done it the first time ! for fitting the best link I found was this great site!
www.discovery2.co.uk (http://www.discovery2.co.uk) & click on fuel harness :o) best of luck !!! I'm sending in my beast for the Autologic remap next week :o) cant wait !!!

Hi Skippy - thanks for the info. Can you enlighten me further. It appears there are two parts to this. There is the INJECTOR loom which resides under the rocker cover and where the problem starts. The cost of this loom is about 35 quid ($85AUD). Is that the one you are referring to?
Or is it the the second loom - which is the ENGINE loom, which plugs into the ECU which according to LR costs around $850 to replace the loom and another $600-$700 if you want LR Aust to do the work to replace it.
I have already paid what I now realise was a fortune to replace the injector loom eighteen months ago.
If it was the INJECTOR loom, how did you clean the loom which plugs into the ECU? Is it safe to assume that once the Injector loom has been replaced, that only the residual oil in the engine loom is left to run into the ECU? (Which appears to be my problem as I had the Injector loom replaced a year or to ago). I have not traced the wiring to unplug the injector loom from te Engine loom - it is hissing with rain here - for the past two days (reminds me of 2 weeks in York in 1984), so can you can give me a clue to where the loom runs - will I need to take of the cowling to see the coonection or can I get to it without removing the cowl?

Hi Langley how ya goin :o) It's the INJECTOR loom! & it's dead easy to clean & sort out thankfully. So you need to get yourself a new injector loom, +- £35 squid , the new one's have better o rings to stop oil tracking down the loom to the ecu unit. L/R stealers are always ripping peeps off by telling them they need a whole new wiring loom to solve this problem! NOT THE CASE !!! All you need is the new harness & a tin of PC board cleaner.
1) Take off the rocker cover & replace the old one with the new one, give the round black plug that plugs in to the new harness underneath the rocker a blast with the pcb cleaner to get rid of any oil, then once you've done that part the rest is easy. remove the battery cover & the bottle jack, the ecu it the slim silver box held in place by 1 screw. Undo the neg battery terminal & the screw holding the ecu in place. lift out & you'll see a red & a black plug attached to the side of the ecu, undo both of these & your now able to have a look at the red plug which is the one we have a problem with! , you can take the little white cover off the red plug to see inside & if it's like mine was you'll be able to see loads of oil inside! give the plug & the ecu a good blast with the pcb cleaner & use a couple of earbuds to help clean the pins. Once you've given it a few min's to dry out. Refit the white cover into the red plug, re connect to the ecu & refit ecu into the engine housing. Once you've done it , give the red plug a clean every so often to clean any residual oil that's still tracking down the wiring loom :o) I've cleaned mine about 4 times now & the last time I did , there was just the slightest smudge of oil.
Your loom was replaced not so long ago , so if it was me !!! I'd try just cleaning the red plug on the ecu for now & see how you go ??? save you buying a new harness for now at least & you can do the clean plug in 5 minutes flat ;o) best of luck with it mate , theres a great photo tutorial on how to do it on w w w.discovery2.co.uk look for egr removal !
best of luck langley ;o)
let us know how you get on

Thanks Skippy
I'll get some cleaner tomorrow and start cleaning - if the Injector loom was replaced properly as promised, then hopefully all I am suffering from is residual oil.
In fairness to the guys who work on the car, they have been very good over the last couple of years.
Still, I realize I need to do more of the service work myself to keep it affordable.
Thanks again. I'll let you know how I go.

Hey Skippy - you mentioned the EGR removal link on the www.discovery2.co.uk website. I assume you meant the Injector loom link instead?
RE the EGR - have you done that? If so, did it make much difference?
Thanks again
