Hi there guys

Well I find myself here as a very happy Discovery owner, but a little worried to be honest.

Driving back from town this afternoon when the ABS light pops on followed by three bleeps.

Brakes are working fine - nothing has changed apart form the light on the dash.

Could this be a bad fuse or relay?

My father is an ex Leyland mechanic from when they were here in NZ. He's had a fiddle around with the relays, light went out, only to pop back on after 30 minutes of driving.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Have only owned the Disco for just over a week - has had the ABS 'done' apparently - I should've checked the receipts for work....

same thing happened to me today but I also had the tc and steep incline light on also had the bleeps. My brother (mechanic) tells me it was probably dirt setting off the abs sensor at the wheel - I had clipped a verge a few minutes earlier.
Hope this helps

Great! Thanks for the reply mate. Was beginning to think the topic had gone unseen, either that or it was a 'don't go there subject'

The light only comes on for me when driving in town. Thankfully that's only at the weekends - daily commute is all out of town. One of the joys of teaching at a country school ;)

Sounds like it doesn't take much to set off the warning bells. Hasn't come on again since it reset itself on Monday morning on the way to work.

these are the infamous "three amigos". i've had mine on for six months. basically, you will need testbook or other software that can access the SLABS ECU from either the dealer or a good landy mechanic who has the computer software necessary to read these codes. a regular scan tool will not do the trick.

it could be any number of problems, from just a dirty sensor, to loose grounds, to possibly needing a new ABS modulator, among others. your best bet would to get the codes read (make sure he gives you a print out) and bring it back to see what the best thing would be to do.

Have heard some of the horror stories

Not too worried about it sense everything still works and it pops on once or twice in a week - only if I drive in town though.

All systems go - fuel economy is fine. Haven't got any issues with it in all honesty - yes it's the 4 litre job. ;)

it has nothing to do with your engine, so it will not affect your fuel economy.

honestly, until it's MOT time, it doesn't even matter. if the lights become persistent, then you may lose function of the ABS system, including the traction control and hill descent control.

where i live in the US, we do not have inspections of any sort. my disco could throw every code imagineable and still be perfectly legal. i have had a non-functioning ABS system for the past six months.

here is a tool that can help you diagnose and fix the problem from home. shipping from across the pond is not bad for the small item, either.

ABS amigo. www.rswsolutions.com (http://www.rswsolutions.com)

i will be ordering one this week.

Hi there, sorry to bump onto your thread but this product you are talking about looks very limited and expensive to me, in comparison to others on the market.

For example, "Nanocom" is a handheld terminal which will communicate with the engine, alarm/immobiliser, Body control, and ABS systems and all for about £200.

It appears to have a lot more facillities for diagnosis than this ABS-only system, it can be used real-time so that if you wish you can drive your car and watch/gather real-time information on the performance of the engine.

Sorry, just realised, you are in the States, so you probably only have the petrol-engined versions of LR products.

The Nanocom is for TD5 engined versions - DOH !!!!!

yes sir! we don't get diesels unless we improt and fit them ourselves. i've driven some nice 330TDi and TD5 defenders and LOVE both engines.

however, the dealer charges $100 US dollars for a five minute diagnostic, which is ridiculous. i ordered mine yesterday and now i can completely diagnose my truck and fix it from home without ever visiting the dealer, unless i need a computer reflashed.

cheers,
michael

Cheers mate I realise that :) quite a few people thought I was nuts buying a V8 with the fuel prices etc.

That little gizmo looks very handy indeed! Cheaper for me to take it to the dealer though to be honest. As for MOT, or WOF (warrant of fitness) here, those lights mean squat so long as it's not rusting, has good tyres, lights, seatbelts, and a windscreen they're happy!

whoops! didn't realize you were in new zealand! i love my V8. don't mind the gas prices right now ($2.20USD a gallon). i wouldn't even have to worry about having rust or good tires! my state government doesn't care what condition my truck is in!:D

No worries mate

Wish I was in your neck of the woods! Inspections here are every 6 months, or every 12 months for the first two years (I think) if you purchase a brand new car.

The V8 costs me $113 a fortnight driving = 450kms. Had a Landcruiser 70 which cost nearly the same to run with a much smaller engine, but not even half the power of the mighty Land Rover!

Maybe we could learn a thing or two from other countries and their inspection requirements. Would save us all a lot of bother and money!
