Smoky starter

My 03 TD4 has recently started smoking on cold start, and feeling like it's only on 3 cylinders for a few seconds. Warm starts no problem, performance is as it should be when running - just a cold start issue. The glow plug light also seems to be on for a few seconds even when it is relatively mild.

Are there any obvious and easy checks before I book it in for a diagnostic?

Sounds like a glowplugs failed to me :) Don't know the TD4 engine though so will let someone else give more detail :)

The smoke is definitely unburnt diesel, fair plumes for about 5 seconds then clear. Ticks over nicely after about 5 seconds. Are glow plugs cheap enough and easy enough to replace to try as an elimination?
