View Full Version : Something missing ?

I hope someone can help.
Underneath my '53' discovery there seems to be a bung or bolt missing from the transmission bell housing ?
There's a threaded hole I can see up through.
Is this right or has something fallen off or out ? If I can figure out how to do it I'll post a picture.
Thanks for any help.

Hope someone can answer this ?
Otherwise I'll be crawling under a few Disco's this weekend....
The hole I'm on about is the one just above the circular disc.
Apologies for not knowing the correct terminology. Give me time.....
If it is a drain plug as someone told me why would it be threaded ?

So u can insert a wading plug for going into deep water etc.

It's an Auto isn't it?
You have a hole near the round plate, to the right, so it isn't sealed.
It's a timing/flywheel lock I think.
Ask Porny.

There is a picture posted further up this post.
Unless no-one else can see it and I've don'e it wrong.....
OOPS!!!!!
Sorry missed the piccy.
Just crawled under mine, it looks the same as yours, mine has a hole there too. (Facelift Auto)
I suspect that Chris is probably correct in his reasoning - unless I'm not all there too!!!

Thanks for crawling under yours !
Above and beyond the call.
Doesn't look right though does it ? If the hole wasn't threaded I'd be less worried. Must make sense to someone somewhere.
Any more suggestions as to what or why it's there from anyone ?

I *THINK* Its a breather....I found a owners handbook online, & there is a section in it about wading, and that a suitable bolt should be fitted (available from dealer) to stop water ingress, & a breather should be fitted higher up, but that the bolt should be removed periodically to allow draining of oil/condensation...
Its also used as a timing/flywhere lock (As already suggested)....
Well, thats MY thoughts....could be wrong!

Thanks for your thoughts.
Just thought ....I wouldn't fancy driving across much sand with the hole there. Looks like I'll be going down the dealers to find a plug. Or I might just use a bit of duct tape......credit crunch and all that.....

Think I might have found it. Check out the attachment.
Still seems weird though.
Mburton2 was on the right track so 1 point to him.
Thanks everyone.
Oh, God I'll have to go down the dealers now......
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm ............................ Dont have any wading or Sahara trips planned, so I think I'll go back to blissfull ignorance, if you see what I mean!
Glad you got to the bottom of it though, it did seem a bit odd, threaded hole - nothing in it = something's dropped off!!!!

Again, thanks for the comments.
Seems to be another feature of my new venture into Land Rover land.
Owned Jags for the past 10 years and the build quality is "different" to say the least.
I'll be back when something else baffles me !:o
