View Full Version : Disco II Leak from "steering box"

Hi all,

Replaced the worn drag link.

Still have "oil" dripping from the drivers side part of the drag link where it connects to the steering box (I think).

All fluids are perfect, so where/what is the oil that we are clearly losing from somewhere?
Can we top up the steering box?

Your thoughts and comments appreciated.

Usual problem I,m afraid - steering box leaking - you do get seal kits for them but not worth doing - better with a re-con box !

I stuck some Lucas power steering leak fix oil in about 6 months ago and it has done the trick.

Might be worth considering.

Cheers

Thanks all,

Two months on, and it's still dripping 'oil' from the steering box, but I don't think it's steering fluid.
The steering fluid level is constantly bang on the upper line.

I'm starting to lose a little engine oil tho, and wonder whether it's finding the lowest point to drip off and onto the drive/car park/ etc.,,,?

Before I changed my injector loom I had oil dripping on the ground from around the steering box. It may even have been dripping off the drop arm.

I think the oil was dripping out of the ECU red plug, collecting in the bottom of the battery box and then onto the floor via all the bits and pieces below it.

It definitely stopped after I changed the injector loom. Easy to check for an accumulation of oil at the ECU.

Cheers, Andy

Thanks Andy,

I'll have a rummage in/under the battery box.

Still does not resolve the 'oil' leak though....?

Car due it's 96k service soon (gulp...) and it might be highlighted then.

I'll, once again, keep you posted.
Cheers

Taxus,

I'd be really interested if you managed to find the problem. Sounds exactly the same as I have. Haven't had the battery box off yet but, always up for a challenge before resorting to spending cash unneccessarily, have ordered a seal kit from Parks and comptemplating attempting to recon the steering box this weekend. Probably not the best idea I have ever had, especially as I always seem to end up with a few bits over (does anyone else get that?). Gus:eek:

Keep us posted re the seal kit as I havent heard of any long term success with them yet - sorry :(

So,

took off the radiator cowl, heat shield thingy & battery box lid.

It's engine oil, seeping from rocker gasket and possibly from head gasket, and as usual with oil - a little goes a long way. The dipstick is showing a tiny bit of oil loss over the past few weeks.

I've wiped all surfaces down and will 'revisit' at the weekend to see where its coming from.

More bleedin expense......
:(

Thanks guys. Think I'll have a bit of a clean up and see what transpires before I strip out the steering box as I have also have a slight leak from, as far as I can see, the rocker cover gasket. I couldn't see how the oil could get from there to where its dripping from but there is a lot of oil/fluid on the ground and the only level that seems to be down is on the dipstick. If I do end up doing the steering box I will definitely let everyone know the outcome - if only to offer up the inevitable parts that I'm left with!
