View Full Version : Top hose replacement...

I've got a problem with the top hose pouring coolant/steam out of the bit that runs down to the bottom and have a couple of questions that I hope you can help me with...
a - I can nip to Paddocks and get another but is it difficult to replace? (I'm not a practiced mechanic). If so, how do you do it?
b - Should I replace the squeeze type hose clips with screw type?
c - My wife was driving when it started and only noticed the high temp when her feet got cold (heater not working) and a loss of power - is there anything else I should be looking at? (It seemed to run OK when I topped it up with coolant).
Thanks in anticipation...

Yes, here a coupe of things:
1. when you've replaced the hose and topped-up with coolant, do the last bit of top-up from the plastic plug hole on the thermostat. Also ensure that the heater is set to hot, on both sides;
2. Let the engine tickover for a while with the header tank cap off, to let any trapped air out;
3. Look for bubbles in the header tank, when you rev the engine.
4. Watch the coolant level carefully over the next few days.

The top hose conections are easy enough to get at with the origional clips and a pair of pliers.But the bottom one is a right b****r,so I replaced the origional clip with a jubilee clip,much easier.
Daves tips on re-fill are spot on.

I'vegot off my sick bed to try and have a good gander at where the leak is (as usual we need the car on Wednesday for a long run and it's not going anywhere at the moment.)
It appears to be coming from not the Top hose but the little hose with odd push type connectors. Being the complete novice I am, does anyone know what this bit is so I can get the right thing to try and fix it... or is it the top hose leaking onto this pipe? I can't seem to find a cooling system layout and the Haynes manual is rubbish in this bit...
Any advice appreciated

I'm not clear which bit you are referring to; any chance you could post a picture. It might help with diagnosis?

I've found a schematic on the internet and it would appear the pipe I think is leaking isn't part of the coolant system. (It's the little plain hose with push type connectors under the down pipe on the top hose.)
I guess it must be coming from the top hose but that appears dry with no obvious holes yet it's definitely coolant comin out ... pink and sweet...
