I hope you can help. I need to replace the alternator in my 300 tdi (P Reg). The chassis number begins with an M. There appear to be a couple of opinions about which one is the best. I've been told that AMR5425 is what I should get but change the pulley. I've also heard of an AMR4248 or YLE10113.

I have attempted to attach a photo of the one I have at the moment. Any advice would be appreciated.

As long as the rating (output amps) is the same, then I'd say the better quality of the two, which suggests a Bosch unit.

Check that there are no updates to part numbers, often the early numbers change to later ones anyway.

The three part numbers you have given are for the same alternator in as much they are all A127 100 amp alternators the difference is the mounting and the one to use will depend on your engines serial number which will start with 12L, 17L, 18L, 19L, 20L, 21L or 22L.
So let us know.

Discool, I'm a bit confused.

For some readon I said the serial no. started with M.....wrong. What a fool.

It actually begins SALL...

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing. It's at the front of the engine on a metal plate )above the radiator.

Thats the VIN number you are looking at. You require the number from the engine block, I don't know the exact location of the number sorry.

There's 10 change points with alternators according to my book so it's a bit of a mine field, may be better to get the part number from the alternator if you can.

I should say I am no expert but the alternator in your picture doesnt look like an origional part to me. I think the orgional part had an ali heatsheild, at least mine did and I have a late N reg disco 300tdi. I just replaced mine and the only difference seemed to be that from "MA" on they changed the size of the pully wheel and also the length of the belt, so long belt/big pully is replaced by short belt/small pully from "MA" on. Evidently LR changed to a smaller pully to improve low speed charging (alternater spins quicker)

When I needed to replace mine (200miles away from home!!!!) all I could get was the early type but it (along with a longer belt) works perfectly so job done!!

just buy the best quality you can afford

hope that helps

Dave

Things in my world move really slowly.
This info is mainly for DISCOOL. I finally found out the details of my Disco.

It was registered in August 96 and the serial number starts 21L

This link from BILGERAT has two possibles. Is one of these the right one for me? Thanks people.
