I wouldn't touch it either. I'm afraid it just looks to me like some square section and some flat plate with bolts added. The Construction and Use Regulations were changed and I'm 99% sure that any amendments made to certain systems on any car manfactured after a specfied date which I think was April 99 so it would cover DII's, must be Type approved so you can't just make your own. I'm sure the systems covered are suspension, braking and chassis so that includes towing brackets etc. What this means is you can only use cars which have mods that are not type approved off road.
I also think your insurance would become invalid unless you told them, and if you told them it was not type approved they would withdraw cover. Sorry but I don't think it worth it. - Phil

Just noticed you are driving a 97 300 TDi so they may be 'legal' on yours but the inmsurance position would still stand. - P
