remove the trim around the gear leaver then the rubber cover and look to see if the plate that holds the springs has broken its not hard or expensive to repair

It should sit between 3rd and 4th. On the top of the gearbox there is a bias plate and 2 springs. What often happens is that part of the plate which retains the springs brakes off allowing the springs to push the lever to the wrong resting place.

The new plate from an LR dealer is only about a £5, the springs about £1 apiece.

To get access you will need to remove the centre console.

replaced both springs and broken plate. has fixed the problem of selecting reverse instead of 1st but lever still sits too far to left have i done something wrong, or do i need to align something

once you have fitted plate and springs select 4th gear then push gear lever hard to the right hold and tighten bolts.
