You haven't been round looking at ours.... :D

You'd need something as powerful as the TD5 at least, as the Disco2 is heavier than the Series 1 vehicles, and the diesel is actually heavier than the V8, according to the workshop manual specifications.

What's wrong with the V8 engine? might be interested for spares. Cornwall isn't that far away.....

V8 is rattling, bottom end. Looking for non electronic plain simple diesel.Td5 doesnt really float my boat
I appreciate the tdi isnt really man enough, its not enough in my D1,hence the Mazda bought to replace.
Thinking out loud really, may not come off at all. Its just the thought of modern looking disco with big simple diesel appears very attractive!

How about one of the commercial vehicle diesels?

Forget the Perkins 4-236, that's too agricultural, but the VW LT van diesel is nice, Peugeot do a 2.5 4-cylinder in normally aspirated and Turbo versions, that is used across the Citroen, Peugeot and Fiat vehicles, and also was used in the last Ford Scorpio.

Most of the Renault engines are front wheel drive and would probably be a pain to adapt, after that you're into the later Perkins stuff and the small Iveco trucks or the Iveco Daily Turbo.

The later Transits also used a decent engine, but again, you'll need to look at adaptation.

We're on the same wavelength!
Will have to be 4 cyl, tried 6 cyl conversions before, whilst the power and smoothness is there they generally work out too big and heavy!
I am thinking Jap reliability, monster power isnt really necessary as its for the mrs so will never work 'hard'.Save that for my truck!

OK, narrows it down a bit, but ther'es a lot of useful struff our there, including the nice Izuzu diesels, very good engines and pretty bullet-proof, the Iveco Daily engine, which I am sure is a derivative of the engine used in the Renault Master, the older 2.8 turbo is 108hp and a good slogger, the VW LT diesel i think is a 5-cylinder, the newest one is 150hp+

You'd need to get a tape measure out and look at length, the radiator could be moved forward, but the adaptation to the Disco bell housing will be the biggest job in my view.

Most new stuff worth having is going to be fly by wire injection, bit of a pain, or you can go back to the early 1990's and things like the 2.4 turbo Isuzu, used in the last Bedford Midi vans, or get a 2.8 or 3.1 Isuzu Trouper engine.

Dont want to put you off,but the engine electronics of the DII are the least of your worries, the electrics/electronics of the rest of the car are a much bigger worry, and if its an auto you may have problems in setting it up to satisfy the autobox ecu and keep it out of limp mode.Thats not even thinking about getting things like the rev counter to work.
If the car is cheap enough then an engine rebuild with stepped liners and a decent sequential LPG system would give reasonable running costs and performance.

Another interesting link, this is the Iveco Daily engine that I mentioned in a previous post:

Have you thought of an Izuzu motor, we had them in the 110 here in aust, went really well even with a large load.
