mrs is away in her disco 300 tdi (1997).

went to unlock it and remote didn't work. unlocked by door key. wont start but red key light flashing and standard starting light set stuck on. changed battery in fob, no change. tried to override using key in drivers door with the code, no change.

of course she is over 100 miles away

looks like a recovery job (may day,national breakdown) but where do I start?

There may be a simple cure, so wait until the others on the forum step up with their own solutions, but if I were you, I'd take the battery off line(disconnect it) wait for 5 minutes and re-connect and try again.

Sometimes a fault/glitch will hold on as long as there is power present. Take away the power and 'sometimes' it will relax the relay/whatever that is holding it on and clear.

Use as a last resort, and make sure you have disabled the radio code feature FIRST. Also make sure you have the code available for when you reconnect.

We see a lot of electrical/electronic glitches in our business, and many times it is just a case of power down, leave it for a while and power up again.

There's so much electronics on cars these days that it is really difficult to pinpoint the causes, but I'd guess an electrical spike locked up something in one of the ECU's.
