I have a very annoying squeal coming from my Disco 2, TD5. I presumed it was the drive belt and so have changed this along with the tension pulley. I have pin pointed the squeal and it seems to be coming from the crank pulley at a mid rev range. It doesn’t do it when it idles or when cruising just in or around the mid power range. I’ve removed the drive belt and can determine without doubt it’s not any of the auxiliary items (ACE, Air con etc) Has anyone come across this or knows what it possibly can be. I fear the worst and have consulted the Haynes manual in engine removal!

At a guess..I'd look at the belt tensioner and idler bearings.

No. I replaced tensioner pully with new one. Squeals with drive belt off.

It's not the wastegate opening? Does that on my 2.5 Turbo Renault, used to be quite noisy by quietened down a bit now.

The older 2.8 Turbo we had blew an inlet manifold gasket which was VERY squealy!! Gasket had been fitted wrong when the engine was built.

Anything leaking after the turbo will give a noise/whistle.

I had the exact same problem, eventually took drive belt off and ran engine, it still squeaked (don't run it for long, just a quick blip on the gas should be enough). It turned out to be the exhaust manifold gasket. Have a look round the exhaust manifold for black soot, of you're not sure, give it a good clean and run it for a bit and check again. It's not too difficult a job to do, but be very careful with the studs. I broke two, make sure you have some spares and a set of stud extractors handy before you start! After fitting my new gasket, no squeak, runs better too! Hope that helps.

Cheers thats where I'll look today. Hopefully I'll find it.

Just had another poke about. Took fan sheild and engine cover off as well as heat sheild over turbo and there it is. Soot all around the front end of the manifold. First stud missing so looks like previous owner had a go. Will pop into my local Landy garage tomorrow and get stud's and gasget. Have ordered stud extractors from Ebay. Seems we never stop learning about these machines! Any how many thanks for pointing me in the right direction much appreciated.:D

I'd spray a load of WD40 around all the manifold nuts asap, might help getting them off without breaking any more a little easier.

Hope it all goes well for you, I'm sure that will fix your squeak! The manifold is two thin bits of metal which act like a whistle as the exhaust gas escapes.

A perfect diagnosis! Worked on the beast last night. Both front two manifold stud had been sheared off and not replaced. Sheared a third off at the back when I undone it. Two sets of stud extractors later and one hole drilled out and re-tapped it all went back together. Doesn’t squeal any more. Thanks.
