Hi,
I have a Discovery 2 TD5 auto, when cold it hesitates changing from 3rd to 4th, its almost like it's stuck in 3 and a half for a bit, sometimes for up to 5 minutes, then it slowly fully engages 4th. When warm it changes fine.
Do I need to start saving for a new gearbox, or should I risk an ATF and filter change, I understand some people consider this to do more harm than good!
Cheers
Simon
im not sure theres any thing wrong with it to be honest
what does three and a half feel like ? have the revs dropped from when it was in 3rd
ive never really noticed whats mine doing, i just drive it and it changes when it feels like it
as a temp solution drive it in third till it warms up and go for top

3 and a half...
Ok, the best I can describe is, driving at about 60 from cold, gear ganges up to 3rd are OK, then cruising at 60 the revs drop slightly, a few minutes later the revs drop again as it settles in to 4th. Its like a very long slow change from 3 to 4, but drive is unaffected, and it pulls fine. It just seems a bit strange as it only does it when cold, after a bit of a run the 3 to 4 change is very fast and smooth.

My turn to reply a tip since one good turn deserves another.
My Disco 2 TD5 Auto had a bad transmission leak last year so I took it into local Landy garage who promptly shattered my hopes when they presented me with a £1200 quote for the work (gear box out etc etc) but also gave me contact details of a transmission specialist just down the road. I popped it in and they cured the leak for under £200 and done it with the gearbox in place! Any how my Disco then new to me was doing the exact same thing you detail. Holding in 3Rd when cold. I mentioned this to the mechanic who by this time was up to his ankles in transmission fluid and he told me it is perfectly normal. 4th is like an overdrive gear and will only engage when the box has warmed up. Mine takes about 6 miles once I’m on the bypass or a bit longer if I go cross-country. It's never got worse or better even when they changed the transmission fluid.
