Have you checked the transmission oil cooler for blockage on the air side? leaves. flakes of ali rust and so on?
Sensors are also known to be somewhat unreliable, but I'd look at the cooler first, followed by a sensor test or replacement.
Assume that you're not seriously overworking the poor thing?
The other possibility is old oil getting too foamed up inside and not circulating properly.

my money on the sesors, its far less trouble to change that than anything else. so do it first and finger crossed

How did you check the oil level? You need the engine running to check the level.
Just a thought

I would agree with Jobo its most likely to be the sensor and certainly the first thing I would try .
Had the same thing , it would cut in on low speed city crawls and uphill off road at low rev but would go off again soon afterwards especially when I got free road .
The part was on a bit of a back order and had to get it sourced specially , maybe because its such a common fault.

My oil temp warning light comes on if it's been raining and I've been through some puddles.....just a matter of getting round to replacing the sensor.
Apparently you might be able to save some time and bloody knuckles by getting to the sensor via an access panel in the drivers side front wheel arch (according to Urban Panzer at http://www.discovery2.co.uk/Oil_cooler_pipes.html)

Not for a D2 it does not have a dip stick but a level plug.

Had exactly the same symptoms. Changed the sensor, all ok after that. Incidently, had no probs ordering one next day from my local dealer.
And as posted above, Im 100% sure you could change it through that access panel ;)

Its one of those loveable quirks of the D2 , if you get a warning light come on by far the mostly likely cause is the sensor that triggers it has gone faulty :D
