does this happen when the car has been running for a while or even from a 'cold' start

Thinking about it, prob from cold, do you think a gear box oil change would help?

Have you checked the clutch fluid level?

No! Is that in the engine bay??

I couldn't direct you to it as I'm a Defender owner, but I would presume it would be in the engine bay! If the bite point of the clutch has got lower (nearer the floor of the car) then it would indicate a leak somewhere in the system.

What's the bite point like?

Feels like normal. I'll go out and have a look.

The clutch unit is a sealed unit, which as to be replaced when fubarred!! When the vechile is not started and the clutch down, it moves into gears smoothly, soon as i start the engine it goes into gears but not as smooth?? Does that mean anything to you guy's? Thanks

Beginning to think it's the Clutch slave cylinder! When the engine is running there's resistance when i am trying to get into any gear, then whilst still pressing the gear lever, if i turn the engine off, it slides straight into gear?? Any ideas Cheers

Sounds like my clutch. seems to get worse when warm. Drivable though if you are leisurely about gear changes. Building myself up for a slave cylinder/clutch change at some point this year.

Is yours the TD4 then? Mines an L series, about £50 for the Clutch slave cylinder.

If you have a L series with the sealed one-piece hydraulic unit, have a close look at the slave cylinder's bracket. The bracket develop "hairline cracks" that are hard to see until the bracket is removed, or when the clutch is depressed and they "buckle and deform". LR parts have "boxes of these brackets" because they continusously fail. If the bracket is original - replace it and you will notice a difference!
