Does it misfire badly?
Water damage could be water drawn into the engine and bent the con rods. Had a couple recently on dieselcars.
Try taking the injectors or glow plugs out and measure the piston heights with a rod. Not perfect, but will give you an idea.

i have removed the injectors, turned it over. there is no knocking, the previous owner said he had it running but was misfiring and smoking badly. it would only run for a short time. i have measured the piston heights and all seems ok. the sump at the moment is full of diesel.
