Wifes cousin has got himself a 97 Maverick TDi to play with, so just wondered what it's off-road capabilities are like before I take him out somewhere ... wouldn't want to get the blame for helping him wreck it !

First impression seems that it's pretty decent looking, has good enough ground clearance and is wearing some chunky BFG AT tyres. It's a long wheel-base though and the rear overhang coupled with the tow-hitch looks like it will cause problems.

Any info greatfully received, particularly wading capability as we like a bit of fording :-)

Cheers, Simon

Well, my wife has a 1994 (ser1) maverick and it has had to tow my Rangie and SerIII out of trouble a couple of times!! Embarrasing or What!

It is fitted with LSD's front and rear and will go anywhere!

However, I do not know whether the LSD's were discontinued (or were even standard) and so the 1997 may be a serII.

Still, it will go most places green laning, with the obvious proviso's of the rear overhang!

I will have to get him cross-axled to check I guess :) thanks

Ford lent me one of the new ones for a weekend some time ago. It drove nice but I wouldn't buy one. Only a 2 litre and I run my car well loaded up. A bit better ground clearance than the Santa, but not so nice on the road.
