Hi all
Just had my November 1997 Disco's front axle repaired at a local none franchised Land Rover dealer but it's come back with an alarm / central locking fault. Dropped it off Saturday and picked it up Tuesday afternoon.

While it was in I asked them to program a new 2 button key fob as one of my originals was a bit temperamental but the almost unused one worked perfectly, I supplied the fob YWX101220A (fob came in a black MG Rover original parts box).

The only apparent fault on the central locking was a noisy rear door actuator (became noisy just out of warranty) but the alarm and central locking worked normally, no miss locks or anything.

When I picked up the vehicle up I checked it over and tested all 3 key fobs all doors locked and unlocked normally, I was happy and drove home.

What I failed to notice was that no indicators or alarm led flashed when operated.

When I got home and parked up in the garage I noticed that the indicators did not flash on locking or unlocking so I locked the car with the fob and watched the dashboard for the alarm led, it stayed off.
I unlocked the car via the key in the door opened the door the alarm did not sound.

Locked the car took all the keys into the house removed a key fob from the key ring and returned only with the key again unlocked the car with the key (did not enter the emergency override code) put the key in the ignition and started the vehicle and drove it out the garage. No alarm sounded and no immobiliser working!

Following day I went back to the garage who programmed the key fob but the electrician who deal with it was away and the service manager asked me to return the following day.

On returning the service manager said all they had done was programmed the key fob they had not changed any alarm setting and could not explain why the alarm circuit had been disabled and repeated all they had done was program the key fob.

He took one set of key and had one of the technician look at the vehicle.

After about 15 minutes I could hear an alarm chirping I looked over to my car and noticed 3 technicians around the drivers door locking and unlocking with the key in the door and with the buttons.

After a long wait the service manager returned to me and said that he was unwilling to spend any more time on the vehicle as it was costing him money and that a "miss lock" error was occurring. He again insisted that whatever the problem was they did not cause it as they "only programmed a key fob" and the fault on locking/ alarming was the noisy rear door lock actuator. So I left with a partially working alarm/central locking system.

Symptoms
Doors lock and alarm led flashes on locking with the any key fob but indicators do not flash and after a few seconds the alarm sounds the double chirp miss lock doors do not unlock and relock.

Doors unlocking via key fob one longish indicator flash.

Doors will not remain locked when locked by key in drivers door, or stay locked when internal door lock nob is depressed, doors all unlock immediately.( I normally drive with all doors locked i.e. jump in start engine and depress lock button with right elbow before driving away)

Front and rear internal lights will switch on and stay on for a long time when drivers door is manually locked and forced to stay locked button on inside of door held down.

Front and rear internal lights will not switch on when any door is opened.

When alarm partially activates via time out key removed from ignition Alarm let flashes slowly with drivers door shut and on constantly with door open.

Rear wiper will not operate was operating before (all doors closed engine running) but washer (without any wipe) still operates.

Alarm sounds double chirp miss lock every 5 minutes or so when alarm is on and is annoying the neighbours.

Immobiliser and alarm seem to be working so at least I can circuit now

Ignition key sensor works i.e. with key in engine not running drivers door open sounder jingles door shut sounder stops.

What I have done.
Ordered a new door lock actuator not arrived yet.

Checked with a multi meter all door switches all working correctly.

Disconnected black 24 way connector C205 from multifunction device Z148 under driver side fuse board and checked pins 5 tail gate and passenger door and 18 drivers door switch wiring for faults all appears to be correct.

Checked under bonnet switch all appears correct.

So now I'm stuck what else should I check should I have the alarm control unit replaced (part number now YWC500640 £209 less 3% discount from Rimmer Brothers) or could it be the multifunction device (AMR5360 £113).

Can an alarm and immobiliser be deactivated without knowing or are the multiple check to prevent this while hooked up to the diagnostics.

Did it happen while it was hooked

How do I stand on a legal footing the garage I took it too seem to have done something with it but are denying all responsibility.

Sorry for the long post I wanted to be as accurate as I could
Thanks in advance for your input.

I'd be inclined to take it to a franchised dealer, at least you can hopefully expect that they will have access to factory information etc., and the technicians will be factory trained (whatever that means these days)

We have to programme two new keys after we lost ours in a bonfire (!) got all the codes required, including the emergency access code, nd will be taking it down to Marshalls at Bedford to have the keys sorted out when we get the V8 running.

I don't want to criticise non-franchise dealers, but in my experience you get less chance of an electronic cock-up with a main dealer, and while spanner work is fairly simple, electronics leaves you with nowhere to go if it goes t*ts up.

Thanks I took the disco down to the local franchised dealer Copley Land Rover last week for them to sort out the electrical problem.

Dropped it off 8 in the morning and collected it 5 the following day.

They were very helpful especially Ian the guy who spent the time finding the fault and explaining it to me what he done and tested.

So they didn't fully cure the problem but they were conscious it's a 12 year old vehicle and how much time and money do you want to spend to fix the problem when they had got the critical functions back?

I've got a fully functioning alarm but with one wire cut.

Central locking and alarm all work as expected rear wiper works the only thing I've noticed is that when you disarm the alarm with the key fob the interior light doesn't come on on the timer but does when you open any door.

The wire that's cut is the white / purple wire from pin 1 of the C255 connector. between pin 1 and the junction with the Z277 diode.

This circuit senses the tailgate door only.

The wiring for this circuit tests out as good and is also used by pin 16 which also senses the NS front passenger door and both rear passenger doors which all work switching on the interior light and activating the alarm when tested.

If I connect pin 1 to ground no difference to the alarms operation is apparent.

Anyone know what the pin 1 circuit does, is it purely the safety circuit for the rear wiper or does it do something else?

They charged me only a nominal fee and not for the time they spent on it but then gave me some bad news the head gasket is blowing out on number 4.

I had thought I noticed that the engine sound different about a month ago but wasn't sure.

Anyway the oil and water don't seem contaminated and it starts without a problem so will probably book it in for a compression test to confirm the diagnosis before I decide what to do.
