Hi, does anyone know if the wastegate actuator goes in and out when you rev the engine, mine dosen't move and experience engine lag.
Cheers

It should only work when there is excess air pressure to dump, and may not be visibly working if you just rev the engine.

There is a Wastegate Modulator on the left hand front of the engine which is part of the engine management system.

You could connect a footpump direct to the wastegate pipe and see if it moves at the correct pressure.
Not that I know what the pressure should be on a Disco but done it on other cars when fitting uprated turbo's.

cheers, do you think this could be the cause of the lag? It only seems to happen when under 2.5rev in every gear, anything over that it lunges forward and accelerates at normal speed. Oh I've got a 2001 disco td5.

Have you cleaned the Mass Airflow sensor recently?

Just a thought.

There isn't much on servicing the waste gate valve in the manual.

It could be sticking a bit so might be worth checking it's closing the wastegate properly.
If it's not closing fully then boost will be leaking off but as the revs build it will overcome the initial loss and start to build pressure.
Don't think they are repairable so unless it's just dirty or catching on something you'd have to get a new one.

More likely to be something else though, it's not often they go wrong.

Cheers Chris, I've already changed fuel pump / filter and are at a loss with what it could be. Also just cleaned air flow sensor.

Any ideas on how much actuator's are? Just checked ebay nothing listed.

hi there just a thought have you checked the pipe from the turbo actuator to the brass 3 way connecter on the turbo body this maybe split and not working the actuator properly.

Clean the MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure). Its the sensor on the top side half way down the inlet manifold secured by two bolts, they get black gunk on them off of the EGR valve. Whip it out and clean it with some brake and clutch cleaner or petrol.
The waste gate actuator should twitch a tiny amount if you get someone to rev the cack out of the engine while you watch- it won't move a lot as the engine is under no load circumstances. You will hear the engine respond to the waste gate opening and the whole car will lurch over as the engine revs. I did this check by the side of the road on a French auto route! Not fun!

Checked my td5's turbo boost and it tops out at 1.1bar, 16psi, so that would suggest that is the pressure at which the wastegate releases excess exhaust!
