I`ve just started my project a 2.5dl M reg Disco and first off i think i need to find out if its a 200 or 300 series,
I am replaceing headgasket and timing belt and not too sure if the parts are compatable.
The front end of my Disco has had a smack in its past, repaired with a donor front panel/bonnet wings and lamps/grill, so identifying from headlights is out,and the rear bumper does have lamps incorperated into it
but again, any person may have changed it in the past.
Ive now removed the head, looking from front, timing belt was at front of engine, tensioner center, alternator to my right, water pump under alternator.and fuel pump to my left and further back along engine,
must be cog driven i assume as its not driven by the timing belt.

Is the radio down by the gear stick, or above the heater controls?

200tdi has 2 separate belts feeding alternator and fan. 300tdi has one long serpentine belt
200tdi has a round air filter, 300tdi has square
If you're still in doubt then looking up the VIN number and comparing it to the haynes manual / paddocks parts website should help

Flat belt did it for me (its a 300 )
it does have the radio controls on the dash "but they dont work so again couldnt tell for sure
So i will get a gasket set this weekend,Ive used a flat steel ruler to check for any warping on the Head, and between 2 & 3 pistons and the nearest water jacket ,there was carbon scortch marks, where the gasket has been breached,The actual fabric of the gasket had gone.
Also found a snapped head bolt (last on right under scuttle) another trip to local LD spares/breaker.

I don't know for sure if the 300 engines have stretch bolts, but nearly all the LR engines use them now, so a new bolt set is possibly required. DON'T use the old ones again if new ones are a requirement, they will not give the same holding down pressure as new ones, having stretched once already.
I haven't got my Haynes books here, and the Rave CD I have is for the Disco2, TD5 and V8.
Peter
PS: Just checked on ebay, there are sets of replacement stretch bolts available.
