OBD is On Board Diagnostics.
EOBD Is European OBD.
JOBD is Japanese OBD.
CAN is Controller Area Network. This is the latest spec.

Don't get confused by it all, just get a CAN capable reader. They only read the P Codes and a few B or C codes. P is Powertrain, B is Body and C is chassis, so don't expect to clear everything. ABS, SRS and Traction Control are B and C codes.

A U581 scanner is cheap and works well. The U381 doesn't do CAN.

If you have a laptop, get Gendan Engine Check Pro and an ELM327 off E bay or buy their own.

I use that and Autoenginuity, a better package, but costs a lot more.

As an owner of a L series (MY98) and in remote part of the planet, I have undertaken considerable research about early "engine management, and other computers" on my L series Freelander. The early diagnostic system of Land Rover is a proprietary Hewlett Packard system, and, is not compliant to any of the current "OBD" systems - though some have extracted some codes . The early Freelanders can only use a TestBook (from Land Rover) or a purposive Land Rover system, for example, from Blackbox or Omitec. Omitec produced a handheld T4 that was able to interrogate early Land Rover vehicles, and I have seen it at dealers in Australia, and used one in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. However, the T4 is very expensive. I note that Blackbox will sell a software package that is purposive for one vehicle (so you cannot share with your mates) and again, this is not cheap. When LR produced vehicles for the US market (V6 model) this was the beginning of a OBD compliant system, however most common scan tools provided basic engine and drivetrain data, and could not manage other units in the car, for example security - again one required a Testbook or Blackbox. Have a look at the Blackbox site and you will see what "packages" one can purchase.
