1994 300tdi es auto When first starting it sounds like the battery is nearly flat and the engine turns over slowly, but does start. I cleaned up the main battery earth,a new battery was fitted.I read on another forum that there is a relay which can cause problems like this. If it is the starter, how much, has anyone got a decent spare and what sort of job is it ?.

Your starter is probably reaching the sell-by date, or the earth connection is up the swanee somewhere.

If the starter is original, give it a break and get a new set of brushes fitted, before one burns the commutator and wrecks the motor.

I just had the starter out of our Disco 2 V8 serviced, the engine was out so easy to do, and less than £30.

Thanks i have downloaded it,just as a matter of interest i put the battery on a low overnight charge ,found one of the glowplugs broken, but started first time.As i have only had it a week,i think the previous owner just used it for thr school run,so taking more out of the batter than putting in. We will see. Thanks all
