Video format convertor

I need to convert a 1.3GB .mkv file to a .avi file.

What can I use that's free, not pirated and doesn't stop the process after 20% asking for money?

Have you tried AVI-Mux Gui (http://www.alexander-noe.com/video/amg/)?

Haven't tried it myself as I don't have any .mkv files..... but I think it's open-source.

Not the most user friendly software but it will convert just about anything to anything.

It's a video format, like a .avi or .wmv - but different.

VLC plays them.
