Hi

When checking a Discovery (N-reg) the diff lock appears to engage correctly but no diff light comes on after driving a short distance. Is this merely a blown bulb or how can I check under the bonnet to verify that it has or has not engaged?

Regards

Chris

jack a wheel off the floor. take it out of gear. take hand brake off. With diff lock off you should be able to spin the wheel. With diff lock on you shouldnt.

I think thats right....

To know for sure with the wheel jacked up start engine and try drive it. With diff lock off that wheel will spin, with diff lock on the car will try drive off jack and it will if you let it!

After testing to see that the difflock works, check that the wires from the switch have not been disconnected. Get underneath, follow the front propshaft back to the transfer box, feel around on top of the transfer box and you will be able to feel the switch and wires. Quite often when the clutch is replaced they get forgotten or get pulled off by accident.

& the switch itself can get "lazy" ,may need adjusting in a bit ? check also for wear in lever linkage [may move enough to lock diff ,but not actuate switch?] also for full engagment you sometimes have to have adegree of wheel slippage ...try it off road

When checking a Discovery (N-reg) the diff lock appears to engage correctly but no diff light comes on after driving a short distance.

I had the same on my previous landy (Defender 110 double-cab). Turned out to be the diff pinion arm or something other - not expensive at all to replace.

More often than not it's a bad contact :)
