My seats are cloth and prior to my ownership, I think the Discovery was owned by a smoker. The seats look grimy and smell of smoke. Having used a variety of foam cleaners in the past I am not convinced they do a good job. I read an article that stated the foam cleaners remove the marks and smell for a short period of time. The problem is that the foam absorbs everything and after a while of sitting on the seats, the smell and marks return. Has anybody used any cleaning agents that remove smells and marks permanently, to leave the interior looking new?

You really want to use a wet extraction cleaner on them, something like a George. If you don't have a machine then using a local valeter / detailer may be your best bet.
Have a look on www.detailingworld.co.uk for a good guy local to you.

Tesco sell some stuff. It's a liquid for "Dry Cleaning". Small clear plastic bottle, red top. Stinks like hell and you should use only in the open air or you will get doped up, but it will lift stains if you have any. First though, get a wet clean as suggested above.

Just for removing dirt use soda water and a clean nail brush- couldn't get much cheaper than that and it is very effective!
I use Autoglym Interior Shampoo for these things (not in the Landy though :D), if you use a bit elbow grease you can get some good results. It freshens upholstery too :)
