DISCON

Hello everyone! i'm new to this whole online forum thing so forgive my ineptitude! ha ha.... I have a Disco II which i purchased from a sleazebag used car salesman, and have had a variety of small but costly issues with her... The latest issue i have is an electrical one, and i'm praying it doesn't prove costly like the others! I recently noticed that remote door locks weren't working. The lil red lights on the keys lights up but the locks don't respond. I immediately started to see if i had "lost" any other functions... and i had! My stereo (factory) wasn't turning on. Also i noticed that my dome lights were out... and wouldn't turn back on!
So i asked my friends who are much more mechanically inclined than myself, and the overwhelming resopnse was GROUNDING! relays and grounds... oh ya forgot to mention that i metered things out and fuses are fine and i have power passing thru them.
I really didn't want to start dismantling my dash and that if it wasn't necessary. Was hoping someone could tell me were these things are grounded, cuz i REALLY don't have money to give to a mechanic to do it (i'm getting married in 5 weeks, and really want my wife to love Rovey and not hate her! lol)

So if anyone out there can help a frustrated Canuck, pleeease don't hesitate! :o

The vehicle is covered in earth points, the most visible are on the inner wings in the engine compartment, there is on in the hollow below the windscreen and so on.

See the attached picture for the location and numbering. The eletrical library of the RAVE CD has 100+ pages, you would be advised to get a copy for reference.

Welcome to the world of dodgy disco's.
Everything in the dashboard area is earthed at one of two points.
If you remove the plastic side panels in the drivers and passenger front footwells and look on the side walls about 250mm above the floor you will see a bolt sticking thro the side wall with a number of black wires and connectors held on by a nut. One on the drivers side and one on the passenger side.
These are the earth bolts for the bits in the dash area. Undo each nut remove all the wires and clean the bolts, the nuts and all the cable connectors to bright shiny metal with emery etc and reassemble.
If you want to be really sure, depending on the age of you car, connect a new earth cable to the passenger side earth bolt and run it across the car and connect it to the drivers side earth bolt and then also run a new cable from drivers side earth bolt to the battery -ve terminal. At least then you will have good earths. Good earths a few and far between on older discos.
Hope this helps you.
