I have a 95 300tdi which has developed a rather annoying rattle/squeak from the front of the engine at engine speed. This rattle is presumably something to do with the items driven off the fan belt as it disappears when the belt is removed. So far I have replaced the water pump (twice the first new one failed!) and the bearing in the tensioner pulley but the rattle is still there!

Does anyone oelse have any ideas what it could be? .....

power steering pump perhaps? engine bottom pulley? (this seemed tight on shaft and ok!?)

Let it tick over, and spray each pulley individually with some wd40. When it goes, you know which one is squeaking!:)

Brake fluid would be kinder on the rubber, and will wash away with a bit of rain.

It's probably the alternator pulley, that takes most power apart from the fan, and that's a viscous coupling IIRC.
