I am trying to figure out if it is possible from here in Malawi to send and receive e-mails to an outfit like Tiscali or Yahoo without using webmail, but using instead Outlook Express (MSOE) via my own local ISP. I have a suspicion that what I am asking about is rather silly, but I have hurt my head thinking about it, and would like to get the matter settled.

For e-mails, mainly we use local ISPs, so can connect directly to them by phone, quickly sending and receiving e-mails in batches. This is good, as we have to pay for the phone connection by the minute, rather than by a flat rate.

However, some of us have Tiscali or Yahoo addresses, sometimes as backups. For me, with my poor internet connection, it takes forever to get into Tiscali via webmail, and to then plod slowly through all the various pages to send and receive e-mails. When paying by the minute, the costs soon mount up. Usually I have "show pictures" disabled, and so can avoid some of the graphics. Even so, it takes so long that I seldom use Tiscali.

So, is it possible to configure MSOE, and maybe Internet Explorer, so that I can dial into my local ISP, and get MSOE in my PC to send any e-mails in its outbox to Tiscali (for onward sending), and to then receive any e-mails at a Tiscali inbox?

Depends on your Tiscali account, but here is a link showing you how to do it.
Tiscali Mail (http://uk-tiscali.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/uk_tiscali.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=235&p_created=1132935688&p_sid=ZHPRCeDj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX 3Jvd19jbnQ9ODcsODcmcF9wcm9kcz01OTkmcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B 2PTEuNTk5JnBfY3Y9JnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li=&p_topview=1)

Basically without the pictures-

Open Outlook Express. On the top level navigation bar, click Tools and on the drop down menu which appears, click Accounts.

You will then see this screen. On the right hand side, click Add and then select Mail.

The Internet Connection Wizard will now guide you through the setup of an email address. Choose a name you would like it to appear on emails you send. Click Next.

Now enter your full email address, then click Next.

Here, enter the email settings needed to download your email. These are:
Incoming mail (POP3) - pop.tiscali.co.uk
Outgoing mail (SMTP) - smtp.tiscali.co.uk

Click Next

Enter your account name and password. Remember that your account name is your full email address.

Leave the checkbox Log on using Secure Password Authentication clear, and then click Next.

Click Finish to end the set up process.

Mr L90, thanks for that link. It has helped me towards partial success.

The link shows how to start creating a new e-mail account within MSOE. While creating it, I realised that I had to continue setting it up by telling it to connect to the outside world using my existing, local ISP connection. Having done that, I was able to quickly download a couple of e-mails as a batch, without messing about with IE/webmail.

Unfortunately, success has not been 100%. I disconnected and prepared a test e-mail for sending through Tiscali. When I tried to go back on-line through MSOE and my local ISP, I could see that it was getting through to Tiscali, but for some reason failed to send. Then it went to try to receive, and was able to "download list of messages", but then failed to receive them. (Edit: Ah, maybe there was nothing there to receive!)

I suppose it was a bit of a silly question which I asked at the start of this thread. The problem around here is that there are few people with internet access, and very few who know how they are doing it.

I will play some more with setting up the new account.

Something I have done in the past to get around the problem your having is to set up Outlook so it receives emails from the other account (in your case Tiscali,) but sends out emails via my ISP.

For instance, Tiscali may not allow users to use MSOE to send out emails unless they are your ISP.

Hope it helps.

Thanks again, Mr L90.

I can now reliably receive from Tiscali through MSOE and my own ISP. This is very exciting for us in an African village. However, it seems that it is not possible to send, even when the e-mail is composed in plain text. When trying to send, I get this incomprehensible message fro MSOE:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'Tiscali', Server: 'smtp.tiscali.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E.
However, it then goes on to receive OK during a Send/Recv.

So, finally, does anyone know where we can get freebie e-mail addresses to which we will be able to send (and receive) through MSOE and our own ISP? How about yahoo.co.uk, yahoo.com, or google mail?

It may simply be that Tiscali (or your local ISP) require authentication on the outgoing server, which is an increasingly common requirement by ISPs to reduce spam/junk mail.

Go to Tools > Accounts > highlight your email account, click on properties.

Click on the Servers tab > Under 'Outgoing mail server', check the box 'My server requires authentication'.

Click on the Settings tab, select the button next to 'Use same settings as my incoming mail server'.

Click OK > Apply > Close.

Thanks for that suggestion, Mr Newsreader. I made the changes which you suggested, but unfortunately I still cannot send to Tiscali, getting the same message from MSOE as before. I still receive OK with the changes.
