Hi, my freelander is a 1998 S reg 2.0TDI. Sometimes whilst driving the car, it judders for a second just like the engine cut out or something and then it just carrys on fine. Normally on a journey of about 200 miles it does it about 3 or 4 times at the most. It hasn't done it much apart from today. It seems to do it more on longer journeys. I drove 100 miles today and it started doing it alot.

Please can anyone help?

Thanks

It sounds like you might have a short circuit. Look at the wiring loom in the engine bay an check that it is not lying to close to the block. It happened to me that that the Rangy's loom had done just that an with the heat generated on a long trip the melted wires touch and cause a short. Otherwise it might be a fault with other wiring ie brake and indicator lights which might be causing a temporary short. Does it happen mostly on bumpy roads?

thanks, il take a look but no it isnt just on bumpy roads, it can be on the motorway aswell. When i say it feels like the engine cuts out, it literally does it for 1 second then drives normal again until the next time which could be hours later or minutes later

With the engine idling, gab hold of the thick wiring loom that comes up the front of the engine to the injector pump.Twist it around a bit,the engine will probably stop.if it does you need to find either the snapped conductor,or the poor connection/s in the multiplug to the pump.Good luck.......

thanks i shall try that tommorow. Also going to get a new fuel filter as I have been told it could be that.

I said that the engine cuts out for a second, well its more like it stutters or hick ups.

It hasn't been so bad today but I have noticed it does it more on the motor at higher speeds than it does on normal roads. I also put the car in neutral whilst parked up and kept the revs between 1,500rpm - 2,000rpm and after about 3 minutes of doing this I felt the engine stutter once so it even does it in neutral.

I would suspect that you have one of the sensors going, such as the cam position sensor. It might be worth getting a garage with a fault reader to check what comes up.

Try this, .......Engine speed needle lift sensor - Land Rover UK Forums (http://www.landrovernet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=161980)

ye i replaced the fuel filter today and there was no problem. i moved the wiring loom a few times whilst in neutral and the engine did stutter but i dont no if this was a coincidence or not because it only done it when i moved it sometimes.

UPDATE: I took of the whole airbox so I could get to all the electrical connections and see most of the wiring loom. Wiggled it about with the car idleing and nothing happened :-( I also checked to see if any plugs were broken or loose and they all looked fine. Gonna have to get it in a garage and get the diagnostics on it I think.

had the same problem, engine stutter and threatens to die with check engine lights comes on and off. brought it to the fuel pump specialist, found out that all the wires in the actuator loom ( the thick loom) were brittle and broken at many points along it.
solution 1: buy a new actuator and replace, have the pump re calibrated.
solution 2: get the specialist to re-wire the loom and pray that all connections and contact points in the electronic boards inside the actuator holds.

solution 2 is my current choice, as where i am residing, LR parts are like windfall, they are either so expensive that it became a commodity ( i had to buy a new pair of bonnet hinge rubber cover coz my was literally ripped off in the open carpark in broad dyalight), or they are so rare that you will have to wait for 2~3weeks for delivery of a pair of gaskets from UK. Meanwhile, i am hunting for a new actuator, just received words that local Bosch agent does not carry stocks, now trying singaprore agent, if no avail, hv to try germany. seen some fuel pump in ebay, but those available were the same age as mine..... so maybe not. new pump in ebay 800GBP, salvaged parts 15.99GBP, very very tempting.

anyone can help with the sourcing of new actuator for ER5634(rover reference) Bosch injector pump (V37) for TCie 2.0L series?

hmmm.....maybe i should start importing recon or 2nd hand parts from UK breakers to my country....i have been looking around, confirmed none in Malaysia. Any takers on this partnership? ; )
cheers
oh hope my 2 cents helped!

thanks for the info. well i just got it back from the garage and they done a diagnostics on it. no fault codes came up so its not a sensor or an electrical problem. taking it to a diesel specialist tommorow to get them to check the fuel system and have the injectors tested. Hopefully its a dodgy injector.

It wont be a dodgy injector, this would cause a constant misfire or poor power output.Grab hold of those wires and give them a good wiggle/twist - its much more likely to be the problem, and rarely logs any faults.

hmm well il try this in the morning before i take it to the garage but i wasn't doing it gentle before. Theres no harm in trying again though, thanks.

tried yanking the loom pretty hard and still no difference, Gonna take it to a diesel specialist if they can fit me in today and see what they say.

FINALLY THE CAR IS FIXED WOOHOO! It turns out that it was a wiring problem in the fuel pump. They had to take out the fuel pump and sort it out from there. thanks for all your help people.

We had exactly the same problem with our 98 tcie, the wife took it to garage for repair twice, both times they reckon they fixed it, once for loose connection, 2nd time fuel cut-off solenoid, fault still came back noticed that there was a streak of fuel on the bodywork by the filler cap.
Removed fuel filler cap and cleaned the seal, it was grubby, the fault has not been apparent since!
No more fuel splashes and I've driven several thousand km's since.
Inexpensive fix in the end.:)
