just wondering , i need a hdmi cable to connect my lappy to my telly.
they range from around 80 quid in pc world , currys etc to around 3.99 on the net.

how can there be such a price difference?

also , my understanding is that hdmi is a digital connection while vga is analogue , is this correct?

is there any other way to connect the two?

my lappy has the following connections,

5-in-1 integrated Digital Media Reader for Secure Digital cards, MultiMedia cards, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, or xD Picture cards
2 USB 2.0
1 HDMI connector
1 VGA port
1 RJ-11 modem connector
1 RJ-45 ethernet connector
S-video TV out
2 headphones-out
1 mic-in
1 IEEE 1394
remote control infrared port (remote optional)
cable docking connector

and my telly has the following connections,

Analogue Audio Input: Yes
Component Video: Yes
Composite Video: Yes
DVB Common Interface: Yes
HDMI: 3
Headphone: Yes
PC input: Yes
RGB (via Scart): 1
SCART: 2
S-video: Yes

the spec reads s video on the telly but i cant see one so i am assuming its wrong.

so , how do i connect it up guys?

If it has PC input can you just use a monitor cable? Like this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-5m-SVGA-VGA-Monitor-VGA-Lead-Cable-Male-to-Male-M-M_W0QQitemZ370238633791QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Compu ting_CablesConnectors_RL?hash=item5633f1373f&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Thats what I have used in the past when using computers and big Plasma/LCD's

lovely , cheers fella.
i take it svga is analogue then?

also , does it include audio?

and , yup i am just full of daft questions today , is the connection for vga and svga the same? my understanding is that vga is 640 x 480 pixels while svga is 800 x 600 so would it depend on the graphics card which one i have or the cable/connection?

or use a docking station with a dvi output which is supposed to be digital. Best option is vga to vga cable

No audio, you would need to use some phono leads or something for that. The cable is similar for VGA and SVGA, but a true VGA cable will not have as many pins. Your lappy graphics card will probably be capable of any graphics resolution thaty the TV can handle!

VGA is the standard, the use of super or ultra VGA don't mean anything really as they are all still VGA... :) Some companies just started using the words super or ultra to try and get across the point that they have higher colour and resolution depth than the previous models or to try and convince the user that their graphics card/computer is better than the competition.. only works for a short while as then everyone else starts using the name on their hardware... :)

The important factor is what specification your graphics card is, as Satancom says, most modern cards would provide whatever resolution that is possible for your monitor to support... or even in some cases exceed what it can support... :)

Get down to Asda/Tesco etc, they all have cables for about £10.00 that should do the job...
