My 300 tdi has been squealing for a week or so on startup, just for the first 5 mins or so, Strange as ive changed the serpentine belt not 500 miles ago
Anyway last night i was driving not too far from home and lost power steering, and battery lamp lit, sh1t i thought belts snapped (so i did a mad rush for home, knowing water pump is also driven by this sucker, and being 5 mins away over heating wasn`t `really an issue)
After getting home i seen the drive belt tensioner was resting on the bottom hose, and had snapped the retaining bolt inside its aluminum retainer, this looks a nightmare to remove to be able to drill the leftover bolt thread away, any1 had this and see an easier way to get this piece of bolt out,
Secondly what was squealing originally as belt was new,
and finally whats made this fail (and shear that bolt) and not snap the belt ?? or is this just a dodgy bolt ?????

The tensioners wear and run out of line, that is the squeal. Very common on a lot of makes of car.

Has the wheel come off or the whole lot? If it's just the wheel, then the bearing will have seized. Take the whole lot off at the centre nut.

I think he might mean the retaining stud has broken, leaving the tensioner dangling.

Hi BC, when the tensioner broke off, did it leave any of the stud poking out?

If it did, you might be able to to get some Mole grips on it and wind it out.

If it didn't, you'll need to centre drill it and screw in a removal tool.

"Why did this happen?" That's the $64,000 question. Why are we all here? Is there Really a God?

These and many other questions will not be answered on this forum.

However, it might be worthwhile checking that all the pulleys turn easily and none are seized.

When you refit the new stud, might I suggest that you put some threadlocker on it?

There wasn`t any old stud sticking out , (except me)
So in the end i removed the water/power steering pump housing.
This alone was a ball-ache
As ive got large hands, big belly and short legs :o all which works against you when working on a Disco,
Ive more cuts and grazes on my hands and arms than a trek bollack naked through a glass recycleing skip.
After all this i used a stud removal drill to get the snapped bit out and used some threaded rod and replacement nut to make up for the missing nut and bolt.
When i removed the pumps housing i exposed a steel water gasket, it was in a form of a P shape well actually more like a pan shape
" i assume this is the P gasket that ive read about "
well i covered it both sides with herpietite just to make sure it didnt leak
after refitting.
I then slapped it back together except the fan coweling " this still in many pieces " after bleeding me for the fourth time from socket rash,
and me ripping it to death.
All was well still has a squeek on start-up though, and i`m worried it will happen again,

That really should go down in the archive quotes section - I laughed my bôllocks off !!!!!

Just a little tip regarding the squeaking, if you place a one penny piece between the tensioner and the block (where the stud broke) at 9 'o clock position it very often stops the squealing.
